Forest Quest

Forest Quest Every day I can, I walk in the woodsAlways in the same forestIts like I have to roamTo be able to come home. Sometimes the branches creak, limb upon limbThey look like grim clawing fingers, reaching for preyThe spiking stumps invite me to stumble into their empty cavesRoots are Rattlers writhing, driving me faster, fasterBriars wreath my arms and legs like the fetters of slaves. Another day tree nymphs and fairies say,“Dance this sun-shiney day. Be a child again,Stay awhile with us and play.”And I am late for supper, full of explanationsAbout how good exercise is for me. And then the feeling that every ancient log and limbNeeds to be examined and dissected for varieties of grainOn my knees I rear back and see the green canopy dome of GodThe rich bark texture of Oak, of Birch, of shagbark hickoryAs I forget the forest for the trees Another day the woods woos me like my wifeA branch with forearm curve and elbow formed soThat I want to caress, and take it home with meI find a quiet little trysting place surrounded by cedarsBedded by boughs; I will bring her here. Every day I can, I walk in the woodsIt is always the sameBut I know who I am,when I come home.

This is so beautiful and

This is so beautiful and full of sincerity, imagination, and from the heart of a true poet who wishes to see and feel what is only there for the eyes and senses of someone who has lost so much. Rosina xena465

Takes one to know one

You hit it right on the head. No matter what I say about other interpretations it feels really good when someone understands exactly what we meant.Takes one to know one (whatever "one" means).

Loved it!

Clem, this poem makes me want to go take a walk in the woods right now, like I did when I was younger. I love all the personification and gorgeous descriptions in the second stanza. Luscious! -Jhena

oh wow

tears sting and my heart turns this is so beautifully said, such a truth so beautifully symbolised we all walk our forest every day, i look for the nymphs - that way they're more likely to be found having to roam to find home - sort out our emotions day to day - reminds me of Joyce's Penelope unravelling her knitting every night. great write. judy

good imagery

I felt like I was right there in this piece.. walking with the poet on that path through the woods.. the oaks beckoning, remembering childhood dreams.. a nice window into a contemplative walk through the woods..

the poem walks sure, safe

the poem walks sure, safe inside its own mind, at intimate peace with its creator... it left me with the reassurance that Earth still reaches to hold us all, and will comfort us, if we but allow... thanks, michael
