THE GIFT

The house now stands empty

where the old folks used to be

waiting to be filled again

with the sounds of a family.

Maybe a child at play

on some afternoon

or just the sound of a radio

playing a well known tune.

But I will always remember the old man

with his tales of long ago

of how he lived as a working man

and the folks he used to know.

And I’ll remember the old man’s wife

a little anxious, like she could be

but always happy to spend some time

sharing a laugh with me.

Their joy was in the simple things

like a flower coming in to bloom

the happiness in the eyes of a child

and those good old fashioned tunes.

But the greatest gift they had in life

is given by a women to a man

oh how they loved their baby girl

from the day her life began.

Now they’ve passed their gift to me

to love her as my own

for now and all eternity

so she is not alone.

Hi Jayne,WOW, I’m moved

Hi Jayne,WOW, I'm moved and humbled by your comments on this poem today. Yes my wife Jensine has read it and was indeed touched by it at the time. As you've probably gathered, the poem was written as a tribute to her parents after they had both passed away (not at the same time)and left behind the house and home they loved. It was filled again with the sound of a family, who turned out to be friends of one of my daughters mates. Jayne, as someone who has only gone public with his poems this year more or less, you have given me so much encouragement and confidence through this site, so bless you for that and thank you very much. take care, Tim.

Hi Jayne, wow I’m moved

Hi Jayne, wow I'm moved and humbled by your comments.Yes my wife Jensine has read this poem and was touched by it at the time. The old folks referred to of course, are her parents and I wrote it in tribute to them after they had passed away (not at the same time) leaving behind the house they loved. Strangely enough the house was filled again with a family who were friends of one of my daughters mates, which is nice to know. As some one who has only gone public with his poems this year more or less, you have given me a lot of encouragement and confidence through this site. I am so grateful so bless you for that. take care, Tim
