The Cant

Have you noticed

a simple remark

can be

a magical thing?

When I hear

particular words

my heart goes into a spin.

I used to hear them

so often –

those ones in

my wondrous phrase.

When I think of them now

I see deep in my mind

picture-memories

of wonderful days.

I don’t hear my phrase now

from others.

These days it sounds

most in my soul.

But when films in my head

bring back old days,

that expression

echoes deep and low

and there are let loose

reels of essences

of times that won’t

come again.

Then way down

in my heart

that song

weaves its charms

and draws memories

of my two gems.

And those memories

are laden with sadness

simultaneously

exploding with joys.

What cant evokes past times

so bittersweet?

“Here comes Judy

and her two boys.”

About This Poem

About the Author

Region, Country: Western Australia, AUS

Favorite Poets: Favourite poets? So many, so varied. I like particular songs, not necessarily the singer... and the same goes for poetry. I can honestly say though, that Alfred Noyes' The Highwayman was what inspired my love of poetry - my mother began reading it to me when I was still a baby, and it became my favourite bedtime story

i love you troy

you did well for someone who doesn't know the background. that was something i wanted you to do before i ever gave you an insight into my poems. i think it is important for you to at least in part make the poem your own, the wondrous phrase i tell you at the end."here comes judy and her two boys" you see, i had two children, two boys. that was the catchphrase when people would see us coming. after my son died i knew i would never hear it again. now i've explained where i was at writing this....i set you a task. why have i named it The Cant? love judy

xxxx

Two meanings troy Yes it refers to hypocrisy, but it is also a language peculiar to a certain class, sect, etc – jargon – and from the singing of religious mendicants – to me a dirge (but dirges ars beautiful) Also a jolt that knocks something out of its straight or level position Just what the words do to me. Thanks troy Xxxx judy

one other thing i forgot to say

your thoughts on cant being a play on can't - that's good. i never thought of it when writing it, but it's a valid deconstruction. see how i say we bring a bit of ourselves to the poem to make it our own? lol

just beautiful; spilling through your pen

Ann of Norway Most beautiful, the sentiments, the thoughts, the memories, the wording of it, the poem is just beautiful; spilling through your pen the ink of love mixed with the pain of bereavement, of the past, of the now in the reliving of the joys past. judyanne they loved you and so do we annanya.

I’ve often found that

I've often found that certain phrases can touch you in the deepest part of your very being. Especially when you hear some of the things that children come out with...makes you think beyond your nornal thinking...Well done Judy. Rosina xena465
