Sibling Rivalry

Sibling rivalry exists as a sad fact of life.

Every progenitor at one time or other

is forced to explain to a contumelious child

equal love for him or her, and a sister or brother.

As a mother, egalitarianism for each offspring

I was constantly forced to explain,

how I loved neither the greater, but they paid me no mind.

Each of my boys would persistently complain.

It’s sometimes too much for a parent to handle.

And it wears thin with us all I am sure -

that constant need for a child and its sibling

to win on the one-upmanship score.

But even when she was fed up with the fights,

my sister could hardly contain her mirth,

when accused by her four year old daughter one day,

“If you really loved me better you’d’ve had me first.”

About This Poem

About the Author

Favorite Poets: Favourite poets? So many, so varied. I like particular songs, not necessarily the singer... and the same goes for poetry. I can honestly say though, that Alfred Noyes' The Highwayman was what inspired my love of poetry - my mother began reading it to me when I was still a baby, and it became my favourite bedtime story

Out of the mouths of

Out of the mouths of babes.....(Kids say the darndest things!) Aiii! The fights my brother and I had! But my daughter and her little brother? She was another mommy with 8 years difference. The most wonderful things my young teen son said one day--his sister is luckier... she has more time with us. Go figure now I'm once every other week mom. lol. Words must be used like stepping stones: lightly and with nimbleness, because if you step on them too heavily, you incur the danger of falling into the intellectual mire of logic and reason. - Balsekar

I love this line: `If you really loved me better you’d’ve had me first.` It just goes to show you how simple, too young to understand, yet intellegent a 4 year old child is. Rosina xena465

Instructional,

as well as poetic, you get the balance here. In actiallity you have demonstrated the reality of near futility of grappling with such issues. A tough topic to keep light, yet the final verse brought it color.. In ink, Dabbler
