I Heard it on the News

I heard it on the news.

My heart broke for him and his family.

Only nineteen

walking home alone on a deserted road.

They drove by at first then stopped and reversed.

He probably thought they were going to offer him a lift.

But they beat the life out of him.

Four boys of the same age

who never even knew him

and left him dead in the ditch.

Another, only seventeen.

Thrown off a bridge in front of a train

by a group of strangers.

His life stolen before even begun.

I wondered what he was thinking as they approached him.

Maybe only thoughts of home.

Of mother and dad,

a welcoming light

and a good meal that waited

in vain.

And as I listen to the stories unfold

and pull the tissues from the box,

I wonder what made them do this.

Did they take a dislike to clothes?

To hair? To the walk of a boy?

Does evil exist in these children of ours?

What brings them to want to hurt?

What demon delivers the blow?

I can’t help but ask myself

What have we become?

What will become of us?

About This Poem

About the Author

Favorite Poets: Favourite poets? So many, so varied. I like particular songs, not necessarily the singer... and the same goes for poetry. I can honestly say though, that Alfred Noyes' The Highwayman was what inspired my love of poetry - my mother began reading it to me when I was still a baby, and it became my favourite bedtime story

Wonderful poem that I know

Wonderful poem that I know you wish you didn't have to write. I ask that question often enough myself, Judy. I've seen young children kill even younger children... too much reality on tv? Has it mutated in our genes? Decades of watching it...the real stuff... the local and world news? The answer? Is blowing in the wind and it is there inside each and every one of us. It's a conscious choice "to do no harm", without hidden agendas. love, Anna "To love another person is to see the face of God." Les Miserables

Yes Judy this is a tragic

Yes Judy this is a tragic truth of some who exist in the world and the sad thing is, are these people born evil? or Just victims of circumstance...no matter...taking life is all wrong. If only more could be done to stop it, or reduce it and help those who commit these crimes not to do them or want to do them again...very nice write. Rosina xena465

Judy...

It is sad times indeed, the news is almost always tragic to watch, and then there is war... man killing man children killing children leaders orchestrating murder makes one wonder doesn't it

thanks richard for visiting

Yes, I avoid watching the news, it all seems so sad. I guess that makes me one of those people who won't face up to reality. the ostrich with her head in the sand. but who can blame me when it always seems to be 'bad news' made by 'bad people'? lol judy

Hi Judy

I'm from Birminghan in England an this is something we hear about far to much for my liking. A friend of mine was hospitalised because a gang didn't like his hat. Its stupid all i can think is that some people must get a kick from it. Jim
