The Letter

She sat quietly with pencil and paper

while her mother did the ironing.

It was common practise for the child.

She often enjoyed drawing.

But today she didn’t sketch, she scribbled,

making neat loops between the lines.

“I’m writing a letter to Nana,” she said.

“'Because I really miss her sometimes.”

Her tiny tongue writhed around, in and out,

of her pursed rosebud mouth

as she thought of the things that she wanted to say

then carefully wrote them out.

She must’ve had a whole lot to tell

for she’d soon filled up three foolscap pages

of beautiful loops neatly strung in a row.

Then she focused on it for ages.

She curled round her finger a golden blonde lock

and gently pulled at her hair.

Then for a while her deep sea green eyes

stared vacantly into the air.

The pencil was waved around and around

as she sat there contemplating.

Then her shoes drummed the table in rhythmic tattoo

as she returned to her creation.

She wriggled a bit, between lots of head scratching,

and carefully looked over her letter.

Her cute freckled nose wrinkled up while her mind

decided if she could be neater.

She gnawed a little on the end of the lead.

Holding the paper, she rocked to and fro.

And then with a shrug of her four year old shoulders

resolved it was ready to go.

To the editor that is.  For she slipped off her chair

and carried the missive to Mother.

“Before we post it, I want to be sure,

(but I don’t want to be a bother,)

that Nana will understand what I’ve said,”

she quietly asked Mum’s deciphering.

“Would you read it to me?  I’m only little you see.

So I can only write reading, I can’t yet read writing.”

About This Poem

About the Author

Region, Country: Western Australia, AUS

Favorite Poets: Favourite poets? So many, so varied. I like particular songs, not necessarily the singer... and the same goes for poetry. I can honestly say though, that Alfred Noyes' The Highwayman was what inspired my love of poetry - my mother began reading it to me when I was still a baby, and it became my favourite bedtime story

I read a lot of narrative

I read a lot of narrative poetry when I was younger. I guess it rubbed off a little. I long for the day I can write something like 'The Highwayman.' Thank you so much for visiting A. lol Judy

Thank you so very much

Thank you so very much Venus. I read an article by a critic once who said that poetry should make the reader work. okay for the deeper stuff, but a narrative should be easy to read don't you think? Thank you for your lovely comment, you always say such kind things. and I LOVE your poetry Venus so your words are extra special to me. love and hugs Judy

I know it's going somewhere

but I'm not sure where as The Letter builds and builds then a spectacular and unnexpected end. This be true it must have been the cutest thing. Regards, Mark "I do not walk the earth and eat out of dumpsters, I'm not a bum, I'm beat."

Adorable!

Your poem was too cute! I almost wanted the little girl for my own. The ending was awesome, both comic and also thought-provoking! My only comment is on the use of the word "writhed"- "her tiny tongue writhed arounnd, in and out" usually I associate the word "writhed" with worms, snakes, naked people in the mud at Woodstock, something that's unconnected to another part- it seemed a little awkward in this style of poetry. Other than that, it's perfection, my dear, perfection! Well-written! Jhena Mariposa

All in the one little letter the innocence of the child.

Ann of Norway "While with an eye made quiet by the power of harmony and the deep power of joy we see into the life of things." William Wordsworth. This is probably directed towards nature but here I see that you have seen into the nature of a child with such graceful thought and sensitive understanding that it is astounding in its gentle loving message, beautifully described and all in the one little letter the innocence of the child. Lovely lovely Judyanne, good-on-you for sharing it with us and giving us the experience again, as we know those little traits in children and treasure them for ever. Love to dear you and your pen from annanya. Tried to find a tiny quote from a letter when my sister was little too but it will have to wait!!
