haiku

Hi Indi, yes, there is the English version 5-7-5 and because the meter is different in traditional Japanese (it translates different)the 17 English syllables convey a great deal more information than 17 Japanese syllables. Haiku was originally Hokku is the opening stanza of poem, or called a renga, later called renku or haikai. There are other forms of Japanese poetry: Senyru- similar form to haiku and emphasizes irony, satire, humor, and human foibles rather than seasons Haibun- a combination of prose and haiku, may be written like a travel journal or may be autobiographical Haiga- a style of Japanese painting based on haikai, and usually including a haiku. Today, haiga artists combine haiku with a mix of other media Kuhi- Famous haiku carved on natural stone, like poem monuments Actually this particular poem is really Senyru, not Hokku Thanks.
