Elf

Not tall and thin with pale, white skin
like something from a Tolkien book,
but short and squat, and caring not
that you or I approve his look

Dressed in shades that make him fade
into rock and forest too
he stands his ground and makes no sound
that could be heard by me or you

Eyes of gray that scan the day
and pierce the darkness of the night
shed no tears or hold no fears
for any beast that seeks to fight

His ears have heard all things that stirred
within the realm he guards so well
the sprinkling and tinkling
of Pixie dust and Fairy bell

He blows his horn of Unicorn
and magic fills the glade
he claps his hands and understands
his every word will be obeyed

He is an Elf, and this itself,
is cause to make us wonder
how far below our world we go
when dreaming takes us under

Thanks, Anna!

I wasn't starting out to write about anyone in particular, but it may have turned out that way, I'm not really sure! LOL!!!

How could I ignore this Lonnie?

Thoroughly enjoyed this, beautifully written. One slight suggestion for scansion- the sprinkling and tinkling the sprinkling and the tinkling Glad to see you acknowledge that elves take many forms, and I like this one particularly, though they are never ever Santa's helpers! They're not elves! No elf would allow himself to be exploited like that! Work!? Eeeeek Cheers, Jess, reprehensibly irrepressible

Gee Lonnie!

So nice to see a big guy like you believes in "fairies" and Elfs! as Jess reminded us! Eyes of gray that scan the day and pierce the darkness of the night shed no tears or hold no fears for any beast that seeks to fight Pure poetry - imginative, descriptive! Great! Thanks Boni

Hello Lonnie

My favorite lines: He is an Elf, and this itself, is cause to make us wonder how far below our world we go when dreaming takes us under this piece is full of dream images. I like the simple, one word title and the theme most definitely appeals to me. I would like to see more poems on fantasy subjects. Always, Cat

Light airy dreamy and sweet. Sure you weren't an elf in another life. I do like dales suggestion on using the archaic form of fairy it seems to fit well with the entire feel of the poem Me

Lots of elf's

A Santa's elf makes sure all the kids get toys for Christmas and even I wear the little green elf suit and hat (well I used to when my boy was younger) and now of course my nephew wears it. It looks better on him also. LOL I like this write and yes the fairys too..so continue on Lonnie is this wonderful fairytale of elves and fairies just don't forget the wolves and the deer!! Great poem Mona

I wanted to comment on...

Vocabulus eruptus, but alas much to intellegent for me to understand. Now Elf, that's my kind of understanding. Brilliant and a pleasure to read. Such imagination must be congradulated with more than 5 stars. Thanks for the lovely read Rosina xena465

My mummy and her sister saw elves

For real!!!! They decided to go out into the wooded glade and see them and they did, or so my mother said, both of them together, and this my mother drew on a piece of paper while a soothsayer girl in another room drew the exact same lines describing them, she stated that she knew what my mother had seen and drew it, so there! Put that in your pipe and smoke it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There's more between Heaven and earth than there is anywhere else! O absolutely loved your poem not that I believe in such personages, but the fair tale describes so much more than just the existence of elves, it has such corresponding sensations of wonder in our lives that why should we not use them to explain things? My Scottish friend calls me Annelf, she said they had called me that for a long time for some strange reason as i don't mention them very much or even give them a second thought unless I am reading to a child about them. I knew Rosina would like this too, love to you from Ann of Norway.

Thank you very much, Ann!

I'm not sure if they exist or not, but it's nice to contemplate the idea of their existence if nothing else! Glad you enjoyed this one!
