My Daughter Loves Batman
When my younger daughter was seven
she liked to talk
about heaven, and
how she'd like to visit the angels.
She surrounded my heart
with the appalling questions of the wise,
as she still does
everytime
she jumps into the waters of life
and things are kind of sad.
Then again, she liked to talk,
everytime she was happy
at the movies, when we saw Batman
thriumph over the villains.
I remember.
And she still loves to talk,
even now, quite a few
years...
after a divorce.
She was little then.
But just the same she believes
Batman is for real,
while Superman is perfect as
a lie as big as hell,
flying away into the nothingness
of regret.
Batman is human, you know,
and he can be sad and wise, or
happy and silly, which is all that matters.
She used to say.
She has grown
to her full stature now, and a wiser
woman now.
After all she went through.
She is getting married again,
this Summer.
And I can see she's become
a human being as powerful and great
as a super hero.
She has to be.
She is getting married,
in a little town,
far from the crowd
and the villains that besieged her dreams.
A better human,
Batman has gone up over cathedrals,
churches and rooftops, just
to see the heavens, and the earth, lit
and bathed in moonlight.
