A Different Christmas

Got out the Aliens movies on DVD
One, two and three.
Having an unworldly lifeform
implanted in your body
without permission
seemed quite appropriate
to the Christmas story to me.
You may not agree.

But limiting the spread,
of unhealthy theology
might likewise,
save humanity.

Well done

And though you may consider this a "one and done" I believe it's worth cleaning up. Line six needs to be split in two and the conclusion of it smootehd out. The message, however, is as clear as it is relevant, which is why I want you to clean this up. --Jonathan Annoying the world, one person at a time (Group discounts available)

thanks, this feels better,

not sure about the new title but it seemed unfair to blame the pagans for my weird vision. Cheers, Jess, reprehensibly irrepressible

That'll do

Much smother. I have learned that some folks will be offended because it is what they need. I suppose this may include some Pagans. But I like this. Aside from the obvious and documented roots the founding of Christianity has in previous religions and the practice of co-opting the religious celebrations of others for it's own purposes, this updated imagery is perfect. --Jonathan Annoying the world, one person at a time (Group discounts available)

I was not worried about offending pagans

people take offense as they choose, members of dogmatic religions most prone to. I am aware of the history as far as it can be ascertained, was just playing with the supernatural element here, Also political. How could mary say no to god any more than Lewinsky say no to Clinton, it was a betrayal of trust. A class action should be taken against god. Cheers, Jess, reprehensibly irrepressible

hey

Loved the attitude. Can see you influences- Bukowski, Hunter Thompson, Hallucinogens - promote that off center (way off center) point of view that I love. And you do rhyme! very artfully. Great stuff - mike

thank you mike

Sometimes I am irresistibly drawn to present an idea counter to the prevailing viewpoint. Counter to popular belief it is not out of malice, but based on the belief that if eveyone agrees there must be something wrong. Cheers, Jess, reprehensibly irrepressible

Dear Weirdelf

I love the way you have put this poem into what I feel is your view of xmas and yet there is a truth about it. We are all different and we do spend xmas in our own way. I found this witty and enjoyable to read. All the best for 2010. Lyz. XX

ta Lyz, I actually don't have a view of Christmas

I celebrate the Solstice, which is what this holiday was before it was subverted by the Christian church, all historians agree it has nothing to do with Jesus' birthday, which was probably in April. I just likely messing with established beliefs because I am a ratbag and a very naughty boy. 8) Cheers, Jess, reprehensibly irrepressible

Hi Jess, Hope the New year

Hi Jess, Hope the New year is treating you well. Solstice is a great time of year, admittedly I love christmas too, but thats because I have kids. It's the middle of summer for you isn't? Well I am going to take a leap and talk about the poem. Now the only problem I see with it, as one of your poems. Is that agree, and Humanity almost ryhme. The ending e, catchs the ryhme nerve. I find this not likly what you intended. I love a good ryhme though, I just always seen you on the side of anti ryhme. All good of coarse. I felt that it expressed your views very well. Thanks for sharing. Julie D.D.

Spot on Julie, and thanks for the feedback

Yes, it does mis-stress humanity and theology. And no, I don't make a practice of rhyming (except for dirty limericks of course) but I'm not anti rhyme, just anti bad rhyme, which I have perpetrated here. I did a little fix on Jonathons suggestion but in the spirit of playfulness that is intended I might just leave those bad rhymes there. Cheers, Jess, reprehensibly irrepressible

All I want to know is how

All I want to know is how the fuck did I miss this until 2 weeks later? You are bloody brilliant, medicine man. You bring to light what ails the human condition. Love, Anna Coincidentally (or not) the last couple of nights I watched the Alien trilogy. All ripe with layers of meaning, esp. the last 2.

couldn't do it alone, goddess

and my word! re alien trilogy. Still my favourite line from all 3 is "get away from her, bitch!" Can you feed me any other great warrior women lines? Got Buffy, Sarah Connor, Dark Angel, nothing quotable from Xena. But especially real historical women warriors. Am doing a research poem. Cheers, Jess, reprehensibly irrepressible

More vital theology

like Thomas Merton, for example, and less capitalist consumerism, I say. (I felt like Aliens III was a a big letdown. Sigourney Weaver carries that girl through both of them, and she's just dead at the beginning? Come on.) Honest, interesting piece. GB

The main thing the whole series had going for them was Ripley

as defender/warrior and anti-capitalist activist. Yes it died in 3. I didn't even watch 4. As to the theology, most Christians don't believe in a literal, miraculous virgin birth, but if they do how can they not compare it to rape? As I said before, it is a betrayal of power far beyond Clinton and Lewinsky. I would gladly lead a class action against that sort of god. But then you also know I have killed that sort of god. Cheers, Jess, reprehensibly irrepressible

The Miraculous

Conception was accepted by Mary, Jess. You're looking at it from a purely intellectual point of view--from that perspective, of course you're going to despise Catholicism or Christianity. If you did it with the Greek Gods, any kind of theism, you'd hate all them too. And yet I'm sure you appreciate all kinds of paintings and everything else that feature theistic themes and write about them in some way or another (like you did here!) :-) You rock GB
weirdelf

weirdelf

16 years 4 months ago

you nailed it in a way you might not have expected

"any kind of theism" A theistic mono-deity is automatically responsible for everything that happens, including say, the earthquake in Haiti, and all the un-answered prayers that follow. Therefore un-acceptable. And of course Mary accepted, how could she say no to god? Like I said, an abuse of power. Pantheism is totally acceptable to me. Religious iconography is another matter, inspiring spiritual, intellectual and aestheic goodness, or badness. Yeah, I rock, but not with anyone's band. Cheers, Jess, reprehensibly irrepressible

Maybe it'll be Aliens that will save the future of the world

Hi Weirdelf The way the world is heading it certainly won't be humanity that saves the world? I wouldn't mind spending Christmas with a wee cute nice alien. We could watch some less violent Si-Fi, although I do love the Alien films, seen them a few times. Before the more sophisticated Si-Fi. I loved Stargate. I've only seen the early series. I don't have Sky TV. Just BT Vision and Freeview. I love the idea of traveling into space to other planets. Xena

Christmas is a confused blur

Christmas is a confused blur of too many traditions and other 'kitschy' agendas all at once. I wanted to celebrate yule last year not to replace the holiday or anything but to experience what the roots of the holiday is like. Where it not for yule, I wonder if Christmas would have any gift giving at all. Yay for pagan - christian assimilation holidays, always funny to think about.

it's the other way round, whit,

Yep, the pagans did come up

Yep, the pagans did come up with it first, we are on the same page on this. How I put it may have seemed backwards. I wrote pagan christian assimiliation (from pagan to christian efforts)because it was the christians way of trying to be more appealing to converts, as we both know.

a freind then had a subscription to fanlog or something so I got all the storyboard art and interviews Starlog maybe?? My uncle had a garage and at night we would walk from the house part to the garage and look at the chain hoists grease hydraulic lift and out back in the cold bitter moonscape the wrecked cars looking like alien ships and in the coffee shop where the buses dropped off passengers behind the drawn metal venetians on the plated glass was the paperback rack with all the science fiction covers pulp magazines the sleeping kitchen nearby with its stainless and pot lights here and there turned on I lived at home when everyone was away FM radio was like the radio transmissions I loved the ALIEN movies and the THING
