Bitter Fruit (Tantalus Breaking)

All day I watch and play

my bruised viola; I care not

of fruit, and haven’t in years. I

compose atop bone split rock,

grease skull mounts wrung oil

saps and blister flame.

I don't get the last line and a half

but don't have to to appreciate this austere poem of reconciliation to the consequences of one's actions. I love the conceptual turns created by the line breaks in lines 1-2. The line "I care not of fruit" sounds odd to me, maybe "I care not for fruit." I don't know whether Tantalus ever played a viola. If not, it's an interesting and appropriate choice of instrument. It's a rather hidden but essential voice in the orchestra (says this violin player!). I wonder though, if the viola should be warped rather than bruised, esp. since I thought Tantulus was in water. Great job packing all this into a short poem!

Thank you

Arrow and Billy. Obviously Tantalus didn't play a viola, but a la Seamus Heaney I think we're at liberty to use some creative license with myth--I picture Tantalus after all these years, completely insane due to his cruel metaphysical sentence, in a mad landscape playing an instrument Nero style. It's a bit of a stretch. GB
