forbidden fruits & veggies

o why o why o why
did my cousins stick peas up their noses
when their mother so often had told them
not to stick peas up their noses

and why o why o why
did adam and eve go and eat
the fruit of the very tree
of which their god had warned them
thou shalt not eat

but by god they did eat
and by god it was sweet
by god they had to eat
by god it was so sweet

the juice ran down each chin
and they knew sin

Fun

Glad to have shared something of the fun I had with this one. It owes much, I believe, to a Carl Sandburg poem that imploringly asks why the children put beans in their ears; and to my longstanding feeling that the biblical god God is a terrible psychologist. In any case, my cousins really did stick peas up their noses; removal, on at least one occasion, entailed a trip to the hospital. Kids. Go figure... Thanks, Jayne and Jess!
