Christmas now (a fun poem)

Cinnamon perfumes the air, and the faintest whiff of snowlights are dancing at the windows, Mummy, is it Christmas now? My darling child, you are mistaken, it is still far away,December's just begun, we lit candle number one today Gingerbread and chocolate santas wave from supermarket rowsand the garden pond is frozen, Mummy, is it Christmas now? My darling child, we're halfway there, a little patience, pleasethere, the second candle's burning, now, can I be left in peace? Scent of honey and vanilla, how wonderful tastes cookie doughthe oven's hot, the nights are cold, Mummy, is it Christmas now? My darling child, stop asking now, or you'll be a questionmarklook, we're getting there, three candles now illuminate the dark Trees are carried down the street, mistletoe and large pine boughsthe school hols are about to start, Mummy, is it Christmas now? My darling child, not too much longer, Christmas is a blink awaySee, we're down to candle number four, I lit it just today Mummy, shall I light the candle? - Yes, my darling, doMummy, do you know what's odd? - For heaven's sake, child, no I think I just lit candle number five...

Oh, this is precious, Nina!

Oh, this is precious, Nina! The images! The scents! The feelings rekindled! I'm only missing one thing... what is odd about your little one's lighting candle #5 after you lit #4? Forgive me, it's been awhile. Love 'n stuff, ~A Don’t let your victories go to your head, or your failures go to your heart.

Anna,

it's about the Advent wreath. There are supposed to be four candles, one for every Advent Sunday, and when you've lit the fourth candle, Christmas is at your doorstep... My kids love the Advent poem: Advent, Advent, ein Lichtlein brennt, erst eins, dann zwei, dann drei, dann vier, dann steht das Christkind vor der Tür. (Advent, Advent, a light is burning, first one, then two, then three, then four, then the Christ child is at your door.) And they always add: Und wenn das fünfte Lichtlein brennt, dann hast du Weihnachten verpennt. (And when the fifth candle burns, you've slept through Christmas.) That was where the inspiration for this piece came from. My son's first grade teacher, by the way, was NOT amused when he said the lines about the fifth candle. A woman without a sense of humour is a frightful thing... Yours, ~Nina

Well, duh! I feel

Well, duh! I feel underprivileged now. Sniff. Advent wreath. Who knew? Not I! Too bad about your son's *teacher*...hopefully he'll teach her a thing or two... My recollections of my favourite teachers were always of the ones enlivend with self-deprecating joy. Merry Christmas hugs to you and your kids, Love, Anna Don’t let your victories go to your head, or your failures go to your heart.

Anna,

my son is now in the 6th grade, so she has missed out on her chance to learn from him. (Actually, I took him away from that school, not because of the fifth candle incident, but because she kept telling me I should have him tested for Attention Deficiency Syndrome, which he hasn't got. The psychologist instead found out that he is very gifted and was much too bored to pay attention...) Do you think I ought to add a footnote about the Advent wreath? Christmas hugs, love and stuff right back at you and yours! Yours, ~Nina

I loved that poem Nina.

I loved that poem Nina. Christmas is such a magical time. I was able to manage a christmas poem to, I hope you get a chance to catch it. I don't know much of the referances or the inspiration. But I can say I now know more than I did! I loved your flow by the way. Julie D.D.

Dear Jayne,

first things first: hugs, love and Christmas wishes right back at you and yours! Glad you liked it, and thanks for your suggestion concerning the Advent wreath. I guess I will have to do an edit and add a footnote. Yours, ~Nina

Loved this Nina

Its simplicity of line and repeated request is a familiar tone in this house od children and yes the advent ring is well know in this part of the world but I hadn't heard the delightful poem that went with it. Thank you for sharing May the light of the summer Solstice shine brightly for you and your family. Seabhac
