Eye of the Hurricane

Eye of the Hurricane

From the pit of the calm sea-bed
He appeared in the middle of the ocean
Spinning waters everywhere
Looking for land to conquer

From his birth, he grew strong
Becoming a tropical storm
Twirling streams into the skies
Gazing at a restless country to defeat

Full-grown category four winds
Found its desired target
Twisting upon the Carolina coast
With his eyes fixed upon the Pawley Islands

He slammed into the homes of the evacuates
Ripping apart the hearts of those in shelters
Wondering if their homes would be spared
All the while, the eye moved farther inland

Never before 1989 had Sumter seen such destruction
Life goes on
Nobody thinks of that day, but
Everybody remembers his debut

The eye of the hurricane
Went back into the ocean
Twirling in the very marine that created him
Like everything else, he died at sea

Excellent poem and thank you

Excellent poem and thank you for reminding us... I'll just say thank you again, keep writing Barbara writes. I wrote a few poems about the perfect storm of 1991 and of course, Katrina in 2005. Wonder if I still have 'em or if they're amoung the forever lost. A "...when it agrees with reason and it will benefit one and all, then accept it and live by it." ~ Buddha

Thanks Anna I really Appreciate your comment. I haven't written anything on other storms I guess because I live through Hugo without the help that most was getting, a single mom of two with a 8 month old and a 4 year old at the time, I was told by all the churches I went to nothing was left and what was left was already taken. Writing this made me feel good focusing on the beauty and power of mother nature at her worse. I'm glad to share the memories. I am really bad with tenses, it has been years since I took English being an A student at the time, I have forgotten much of it. Therefore I appreciate critiques especially in the tenses area. You write really good poems so I hope you find your older hurricane poems. *Life is a roller coaster taking you to the top, but when you come down you never know where you might land* ~~~~~~~~~ Be whoever you are At all times, and Remember that Because of this, people will Always Respect, and Admire you ©2008Leonard Respectfully Yours, Barbara
