Little Elephants

He glances up from his book,
A moment's peace interrupted.
They stampede into the room,
Little elephants, full of smiles.

A sigh escapes as he tries to hide exhaustion,
They rain on him, unaware of his predicament.
"Daddy, today I..." "Mine was bigger!"
He nods and smiles approval, feigns amazement.

Darting back and forth, they burst with excitement,
Four happy little faces, full of beans. He feeds their fantasy, encourages their imagination,
But doesn't notice one more dejected little elephant
Standing by the door.

question

does the 1 standing by ones self relate to a moment in time. specifically dealing with yourself. what are you hiding and why hide it with elephants? a poem to make ones self think. amazing none the less. open up and tell your story don't be the one who isn't noticed and stands off to the side waiting to be picked on just so you can be noticed

A very late response

I know this is very delayed but better late than never. This poem waas written to make you think so I'm glad you're asking all the right questions. It does relate to me a little but was written for a more broader audience. I feel it is always important to see both sides of the story and this is just one view. Thank you for your comments and I look forward to hearing your opinion on some of my other work.

Kitkat...

a late welcome to the site from me, I see you've posted a few poems but this is my first I've read, and I must admit it was the wonderful title that drew me in for the read... the images were very good in this short write, I've been stampeded many times by the Little Elephants so it was easy for me to put myself in the chair... on the ending, it does leave one to wonder but that is sometimes very effective in a poem, and in this case, in my humble opinion, it is. Because now I am wondering who the disregarded one is, the wife would be my guess, it is hard to juggle four kids and send the love needed sometimes... enjoyed the read Richard

Thank you for your comment. Was nice to read your interpretation of my poem and glad to see you understood what I was trying to say. It is always hard to find balance and important to see both sides of the story. Thank you for the encouraging comment.
