fifty years hence
fifty years from now,
maybe even eleven days'
journey hence,
or fifteen minutes after the
darkness prevails
I will have been rendered a moot point,
a small blip on a cosmic screen,
neither found underground
inside a burial vault
near an orchard grove
nor dancing in the wind--
my ashes will have become
settled in time
but if someone should read a poem
of mine floating in an oasis
of dates
and wonder who I was
my life will have been worth at least
one sunrise.
maybe even eleven days'
journey hence,
or fifteen minutes after the
darkness prevails
I will have been rendered a moot point,
a small blip on a cosmic screen,
neither found underground
inside a burial vault
near an orchard grove
nor dancing in the wind--
my ashes will have become
settled in time
but if someone should read a poem
of mine floating in an oasis
of dates
and wonder who I was
my life will have been worth at least
one sunrise.
