Auntie Sam

Come and let me care for you
I swear I understand
I'll nurse you from cradle to grave
Come and take my hand

No one will have more than you
For I'll always provide
All I want is your freedom
Soon I'll take your pride

Nurse at my breast of mediocrity
The other one is sorrow
I'll feed you from this one first
The other one tomorrow

What matters freedom if you have
Me to hold your hand
What matters pride to the state
I'm sure you'll understand

Give up your hope for the future
You won't need it again
Soon I'll control your whole life
For now the change begins

Interesting poem. I’m

Interesting poem. I'm curious, is it referring to ones overwhelming protection over another in proclamation of supposed love? I think this poem is honest and thought-provoking. Thank you for your contribution. The Voice

Voice, thank you

I know it is ambiguous, but think of it as a statement on society today. Respectfully, Rett: "When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. When the government fears the people, there is liberty". Thomas Jefferson

The story within the story,

The story within the story, Rett? Interesting, thought provoking and a bit frightening. Control? I hate the thought of anyone having control over me; hope I'll never live to be infirm. Yet we all have it every day of our lives, most of it we never question or notice. Thanks. ~A

had a different take

I had a totally different take on this until I read everyone's comments. I saw this as the loss of freedoms, over time, that occur in a democratic society. power attracts the power hungry, they make promises they know they cannot keep, they exist and operate in mediocrity and bring sorrow to their nation. but that's just me 8) and the last verse "Give me your hope for the future You won’t need it again Soon I’ll control your whole life For now the change begins" makes me think of a politician who comes into power seeming so wonderful, bringing so much hope, and then turns out to be a total farce, a dictator, doing things "for your own good" which are actually depriving people of their basic rights and freedoms, the rights and freedoms they at one time took for granted and enjoyed. great read. virginia

You absolutely nailed it dead center 100%. It is exactly what is happening right now in the good old U.S. of A. Respectfully, Rett: “Anyone who sacrifices liberty for security deserves neither.” Benjamin Franklin
