Growing into Battle

Why have I been left to guard these woods?

I am brave!

I can fight!

I would battle bravely on the field

Remember the day, I saved Micha's life?

I didn't need to be told what to do

I killed three grown men to reach his side

Now I am denied, left to watch their backs!

Who would think to use these woods?

They are far from the field of honor

From here, I hear the shouts and sounds of battle

Stay here like a child!

I could run to them and help!

But I am a good soldier

I do what I am told

The din of sword and shield clatter

Then lessen... I fear the worst!

Breathless footsteps...

A sign not recognised

Hesitant eyes looking

A motion...Two!

My heart leaps!

Steady...

Motionless, I wait

NOW!

Taken by surprise, the first falls

His partner is a veteran

He blocks my overconfident blow

Swirling cloak, bull-fighter fashion

Slashing sword, clubbing shield

I am forced back

Mighty blows, I strike!

Arms shaken with his vigor

We dance...

My body is my mind, needing no instruction

The rythmn is mesmerizing

Experience and age

Contending with youthful zeal and innovation

He tires... Just managing...

I rise to the occasion and he falls

As my vision clears...

My fellows in arms are gathered

They give huzza's and cheer

I am clapped upon the back

Ruffled and poked

Smiled upon

Father is so proud!

" I knew he would win!"

" I put him there! He did what he was supposed to!"

Now understanding comes...

Oh what a battle I am exhausted,

Oh what a battle I am exhausted, its a world i do not know and one that I would not wish to know, but to know that you did well I am proud of you Sir Geezer. I did fence for my county as I have already mentioned, but nobody ever got hurt! Great stuff Sir Knight of the realm, from your Queen, Ann.

Growing into battle

Thank you, I had this idea after watching a show about the Spartans. The way that young boys were trained to be soldiers. Glad you enjoyed! ~ Gee

Gee...

Covering the rear is indeed an important position in battle, I like the way you've humanized the flank watch... enjoyed the read sir! Richard

Battle...

Just thinking about how boys were turned into men and tested in battle. The Spartans were the ultimate soldiers. Glad you enjoyed! ~ Gee
