I Am Better Than You

Once the Moon and Sun had had a little fight
Bickering who was best and who could shine more bright
The Sun thought she ruled the world because she made the flowers grow
The Moon thought he was the bomb because of his beautiful glow
The Sun said if it was not for her the birds would never sing
The Moon laughed at her for saying such a silly thing
"Who cares about those stupid birds, I make the wolves all howl
When I wink at them from way up high they begin their nightly prowl"
"The creatures that  come out at night, are so much better than the day,"
The Sun looked at him and scoffed, "Nope sorry there is no way."
They kept on fighting like this for hours, their voices way up high
They were so busy yelling at each other they did not hear God's sigh
So God cleared his throat and both looked up at Him
The look in His eyes were sad and his voice was very grim
"My loved ones he said to them, You both are dear to Me,
As much as I love My mountains, is as Much as I love My sea"
Both of you have a duty to watch my folk below,
I need you both to help me with this for I love them so"
So stop this bickering i ask of you for this can not go on'
For what kind world this would be with a night without a dawn"

the sun and the moon...

Loved this story poem that was very cleverly rhymed, the flow very mellifluous and if you read it out loud it just rolls out and gushes forth like a waterfall. In mythology the sun is usually the male (Sol, Apollo, Ra.. etc) and the moon usually the female (Selene, Coyolxauhqui, Mani... etc) so the switch is great and inventive as is the story... my fave one of myth is the one eyed god, in which the sun is his good eye and the moon his blind eye and this so reminded me of this! The battle of day and night, always in contrast and only in dusk and dawn do we see them mingle in the slightest, love the whole premise and how you use the world to tell the story. I'd like to think that we are watched over the celestrial bodies up there... and this poem brings such ideas into frame, imagination and life. Great write Elizabeth! Dale :)
