My Father's Laughter

My Father’s Laughter

When the life of flowers

is cut off

looking their best

fresh from the morning

sunshine,

onto the silence

of the living room table,

they give us joy only

for a while;

when beautiful sounds

end up encased in a song

of thanksgiving,

the beloved listens to

you ever

more attentively.

But you don’t hear me

anymore than these flowers

I’ve just placed

beside your portrait,

dear father.

The branches have

been broken, and

the weary days

cut off from your

presence

have been a

hindrance to my years.

Nevertheless,

our shadows have kept

growing upon the

silent waters of

younger years,

when we used to scare

the fishes with

our laughter gone by,

running fast with

the river, to fill God knows

what Eternal void!

Hugo

Streatching out those nimble fingers to write a beautiful sentiment in poetry. There are many lovely lines , one typo ( sorry but I am a pain) 'anymore than this flowers' should it be 'anymore than these flowers'. our shadows have kept growing upon the silent waters of younger years, This is just such a great image, soft and gently but very visual. Well done Hugo. Seabhac

Thank you Seabhac:

And thank you for the correction; I guess I'm bound to become the best poet I can be with your gentle scrutiny, lol. I'm happy that you like my poem. You are not a pain at all, don't worry. Sincerely, Hugo

Dear Hugo

The kind of relationship that this poem implies you had with your Father is wonderful indeed. Your poem is filled with great images and beauty. It brightened my day to read this. Always, Cat

Dear Cat:

Yes, during the last 15 years of his life my father, and I had a good relationship. After his passing I have always remembered him in the light of those last years. My parents have lived in the USA for more than 40 years. I was the last one to come with my own family, 25 years ago. So you can see, I lived separated from them for quite a good number of years, which left and impact, and put me at odds with the rest of the family. Anyway, I won't tire you with the story of my life. I just wanted to say thank you for your kindness, and the stars. Sincerely, Hugo

Good Dear O Molly:

I'm very happy for you visit, and even happier because you liked my poem. My father was an excellent man who lived an admirable life; I'd say it's rather difficult to follow in his footsteps. Thank you O Molly for your generous comment and the stars on my poem. You've made my day! Sincerely, Hugo

Dear Hugo, You honour

Dear Hugo, You honour yourself and your father with this exquisitely tender poem. You have shared with us the man who taught you how to abide in the essence of life. Thank you. ~A There are no strangers in Paradise.

Dear Kailashana:

You are right, my father was a sincerely righteous man, who taught me how to abide in the essence of life. During his last days he was a silent soul, caring and tender hearted, whose previously clear and practical mind was being consumed by the sadness of Alzheimer's disease. On the other hand, my mother, whom I love very much, and still lives with one of my brothers, taught me the love of books, and the joys of what I have given to call "intuitive thinking". Anna, thank you for your kind words. Sincerely, Hugo

impressive

When the life of flowers is cut off looking their best fresh from the morning sunshine, onto the silence of the living room table, they give us joy only for a w i love these lines. they speak about the essence of life within a time frame. i might not get the interpretation right but the message i can infer from the lines above is one of time independent sequences in life. i love ypur poem.

My friend Jabuu:

Yes my father was at the essence of life, and he died because he lost too much blood from a hip operation. He was 88 years old, but he was strong, and walked by himself, and did many things by himself to help my mother, whom he loved more than than anything. Thank you for commenting. I'm glad that you like the poem about my father. Sincerely, Hugo

Great bond between a father

Great bond between a father and a son. Lost my father last year and your poem flashes back the good and weird times i had with my father and forgetting his popular saying: "Before Abraham there was GoD" which poured out often when i want to outsmart him.Hugo you bring tears to my eyes.A good work done. My friend Adjei-Baah:

I'm glad I made you remember your father and refresh your eyes with some tears. In a way, I consider the loss of a father as a graduation of manhood, God's idea that we can be by ourselves in the world. I believe our fathers may still smile at this idea, but that's how gratefully positive I am for my good father.
