EARLY MORNING BIRD
EARLY MORNING BIRD With the coming crack of dawnWhile we were still on bedThe early morning bird sangI write on the road, you see So I got up from my divanWent to the central boulevardI saw Ekrang perching on the treeAnd the footprints of yesterday To prove his verbal knackIt flapped its wings and boastedI passed standard six, my friendAnd I have been to the queen On my first attempt at schoolI was asked to touch my left earWith my right fingers over my headI was sent home, I failed the test For those who don’t know a thingAnd really want to find a way outCome and learn with me on the treeAs I speak and write on the road I wanted to learn, but had no wings to flySo I studied the footprints on the roadOf men who passed here in recent pastEkrang sang with mock reassurance You will pass standard six, comradeAnd will also go to see the queenFor those who don’t want to learnWill really know not a thing
