now and then

when you've reached deep
into the heart of a caress
a kohl-eyed leopard makes,
as he senses his jaws around
his gazelle kill

when you have lived the sorrow
and the loneliness
a swan lives after his life-long mate
dies and he glides the pond alone,
serene still

when the last leaf no longer clings
to the Sycamore tree and the sky
is no longer hinged to the dreamer,
when all the colour of the landscape
returns to immaculate shoes,

then and only then will you know
how much I love you, then and only
then will you know what it means to
live and die in the same breath,
abiding without you.

there are those rare moments

there are those rare moments in writing when we capture that profound truth, in all it's simplicity and timeless beauty ,that then make the words seem irrelavent to the spirit that forms them. This is one.

Dear Anna

I truly felt the cold emptiness of the sorrow in loneliness within all your lines, but my favorites are: when you have lived the sorrow and the loneliness a swan lives after his life-long mate dies and he glides the pond alone, serene still because they touched my heart. Always, Cat

To Live And Die In The Same Breath!

Ana, This is just awesome! You made me feel the depth of pain... These lines hurt me a lot; "when you have lived the sorrow and the loneliness a swan lives after his life-long mate dies and he glides the pond alone, serene still" Loved it. Though the title did'nt tell me the poem is so great, before reading the poem... Sincerely, Wafi "Culture, location and beliefs; All vanish with love!" ~Afzal Shauq~

Every comment deserves an individual reply, however, I'll answer in one reply. (Please don't report me as SPAM ;-) too tired to wait for the links. Wafi, Dear, the title actually came from a line of a recent poem. Bonita, high praise, indeed. Thank you in 465 languages. http://users.elite.net/runner/jennifers/thankyou.htm Cat, those lines are always with me. In a small college I attending, taking my one and only poetry class, there was a pond on campus. A mated swan couple had made it their home. One day, we noticed there was only one. The other had been killed with an arrow. Shortly thereafter, the other one disappeared. I don't remember/know if the culprit was ever found. O. Yes. I felt that occurring as the images and words were coming together. Thank you. I love when that happens, wish it be occur more often, but then we'd be missing the essence of *perfection*, eh? Hugo, when the soul sings, I listen. ;-) Thank you Easylife, how I suffer for my poetry! lol. Jayne, keeping the heart open, regardless is not easy. I know you know. Thank you all, my Neopoet family, all lovers of poetry. ~A

Love is lonely, it is inside

Love is lonely, it is inside one and can be reflected in another and yet it is inside one still whatever one does, there like some most wonderful hurt. How do you expect us to react to such poetry? How oh how? The jaws around the kill ow ow what a strong sensation and painful reality in the same breath as the caress, oh can there be a more impressive (imprinted) way of putting this? NO!! The swans who mate for lifelong wandering, when one dies what then, alone across the waters of life, so poignant. I too love the last leaf and just today took a photo of one such, it seemed to be looking at me, left on a bush beside the track its green-ness still there, but with some beautiful dotted markings around its edges and it was in a way, exhibited to all who passed, like a painting on a wall in a gallery. So I know that feeling of seeing the last leaf on a tree, I always react with sudden silent wonder at it, almost giving it a presence it doesn't have for a moment, like love. Love you Anna Anna oh dearest Anna that first verse is so very powerful that it completely eclipses anyone else's attempts at describing love with such, such oh wow i cannot find good words to say it is so absolutely wonderful, is it not everyone, totally fantastic, I cannot find the right adjective as all seem so suddenly banal next to the poem it is trying to describe. You are a magician of words here Anna of the waving wands of the willow tree sobbing and laughing in the same breezes.

Dear Sister of the Northern

Dear Sister of the Northern Lights, your comment, as usual, sheer poetry. And you understand--"exhibited to all who passed, like a painting on a wall in a gallery" ..... as we walk through our lives, we paint the world as images in our mind....immaculate shoes. Love is All, Anna There are no strangers in Paradise.

the extraordinary tenderness required to have such talent thrive

Ahhhh Anna, beautiful & smooth as ever, somehow this was good wine (good red wine, forgive me)... stuff like this has to be aged & isolated for many a year to come out (no reflection on aging honey), just the extraordinary tenderness required to have such talent thrive... & the hell one has to have lived at some stage at least in order to know it & paint it in words so well. I love you dear one, thank you for sharing so much of your hearts bruises & joys. Cheers Anni~ "When we feel love and kindness toward others, it not only makes others feel loved and cared for, but it helps us also to develop inner happiness and peace". H.H. the Dalai Lama

Yes, I spill my guts all

Yes, I spill my guts all over. However, I do seem to have aged like a finer wine, the edges not as sharp, a bit more tender as I fade every day more and more into the poems I write... someday that will be all that is left of me, and my children, and theirs. Thank you Anni, your own lovely heart is a joy to see. ~A There are no strangers in Paradise.

From a blank canvas you have painted a masterpiece. Perfected brush strokes build this emotion into real life. Perfectly sad. Regarding your poem, I will simply quote my favorite free form poet here at Neopoet, whose poetry I enjoy, marvel at, and diligently study:- "Here the depth of poetry solid speaks". A marvelous poem, Anna Respectfully Jim "Laws and rules don't kill freedom: narrow-minded intolerance does" : Race

Jim, I don't see you often on my poetry page, and when I do, I'm happy. I too love that line of immense stature, remember it though I'm not 100% certain who wrote it. Thank you. ~A There are no strangers in Paradise.

I seldom comment on your work

because there is little or nothing to critique, and the level of expertise and richness is so high that repeating superlatives would quickly become trite. This one strikes my heart, though. The author of the quote is Orgami; who else but Steve would write such a wonderful line? Heehee. With much respect Jim "Laws and rules don't kill freedom: narrow-minded intolerance does" : Race

those last two

lines are without flaw, a rare thing to say indeed! "to live and die in the same breath"--this is poetry here. the whole thing smells of Rilke to me, though I don't know if he was an inspiration on this one--excellent poem.

I really don’t know. When

I really don't know. When I had a cosmic unity experience several years ago, it's as if all my atoms dispursed. You have no idea how difficult it was for me to gather myself back to do the mundane things of life. I was still a Realtor at that time, and driving was um...interesting... Anyhow, poetry reemerged and I more often than not wonder who wrote that. ;-) Esp. when an editor sends me a poem to proofread, weeks or months later. I've had minimal exposure to poetry, except for Kalil Gibran, Tagore in the past, and Rumi, Hafiz more recently. A stalled book has a Rilke poem I fell in love with as the opening. Perhaps I'll post my poem that was written before I read his. Let me know what you think. A German lover/poet was in the process of translating it (far better than what I have) when he died suddenly. So that's more information than you needed, eh? ~A p.s. Rilke has a scent, not a smell, thank you very much. Smile. p.p.s. You remind me a little of David Bowie, and someone else, can't quite put my finger on it. There are no strangers in Paradise.

My apologies...

actually, as my comment was not about this beautiful poem, nor you, nor dismissive in any way. I'm not sure how it ended up there. I was thinking on your words, feeling them, but was obviously somewhere else as well. Forgive me. Please continue your beautiful writing and ignore my comments.

There are no accidents, Robert. Do you feel... connected??? We all feel the pangs of disconnection at times....a depression of sorts. There's nothing to forgive, and I pay attention to all comments, perhaps you were commenting on my signature line. ;-) Much love, Anna There are no strangers in Paradise.
