Mississippi Moonrise

a wide of endless slow divides
tall bluffs of cooling silence
still and dark against clear sky
turgid through long bends
slow-moving where it wanders
underneath a curving span
arched blue and quiet
to the other darker side

through formlessness
the diamond stars spread wide
across emptiness of nighted sky
mirrored by the shimmered lights
of unseen towns hung softly in the dark
across the roiling water
in strings of precious jewels
lighting dreams of sleeping lives
a world of river away

underneath the canopy of forest
hiding long miles of slumbering farm
from endless river bank
branches black on cloudless sky
cupping fields of night-kissed corn
with wilderness
we watched the moon rise golden
with September
slow and heavy from the east
to kiss the stillness of the water
into eternities of silver
the infinite reflections
of our peace

I can only imagine

I can only imagine 'Mississippi Moonrise', but your use of imagery makes me long for the experience, to witness what gave you the inspiration to write these beautiful lines. Lines 9 to 17 are particularly captivating. Well done. T.

Well well

I stole the spotlight for a little while, did I? Lol Ironic, to say the least. It still does not change my opinion though - I'll leave the nominations to others! I am lad that you enjoyed my effort enough to nominate it. Respectfully Jim "Laws and rules don't kill freedom: narrow-minded intolerance does" : Race

"Golden with september" The moon.

"Golden with september" The moon. You set a picture pure and beautiful in our minds as we find ourselves first as if mists floating above, viewing the grand river seeming to slowly meander its way beneath the bridges and the dark sides if the forests, oh what still black inky darkness you create for me Race9togo. I like the nighted sky play- and those strings of jewels that are so familiar in the dark. The stillness of night. I like the corn cupped in the wilderness, lots of kissing going on here! Was it the 'we' that were kissing? Eternity's stars reflected as visions of peace, also a nice thought. Atmospheric this piece Yours Ann of Norway.

Thanks Anne

I wrote this piece in the morning, after seeing the river in the dark for the very first time, at the motel that we stayed in that night. I would have slept beneath the stars, as I often did when I was young, but my wife and children are all confirmed urbanites! And yes, we did steal a kiss or two, my wife and I, underneath those trees! Thanks again, glad that you liked this.
