Swimming in this skin

When the sun on my skin, brings me joyous laughter
There is such a sense of wistful “happy ever after”
And my dearest ones, let’s go down to the water
Swimming like a mermaid in the sun
Toss the worries of our hearts up and turn them into fun

Under here, beneath my skin I feel a river of my history
Why this place, this time, this face will always be a mystery
You know immersion here has always been a gift to me
Swimming like a mermaid in the sun
Toss the worries of our hearts up and turn them into fun

I’ll feel better in the water
Days stretch out and night is shorter
You are tattooed on my heart
My skin is the translucent part
See the beating clockwork here inside
Nothing here that I would want to hide

Let
me
go

Swimming like a mermaid in the sun
Toss the worries of our hearts up and turn them into fun

He may well forsake you, a siren silenced still
I believe that given time, you might escape his will
Until then, look for kinder hearts that bloom and flow and spill
Swimming like a mermaid in the sun
Toss the worries of our hearts up and turn them into fun

Kiss me Evening, take my heart, I’m so willing to give in
I’m finding this human skin such an awful state to live in
Blistered fingers, caved in dreams, yet I can't help forgiving
Swimming like a mermaid in the sun
Toss the worries of our hearts up and turn them into fun

In this place I feel abandoned, yet we’re all contained
Sing me siren songs and dances, I will be sustained
Clouds were angels always for me, even if it rained
Swimming like a mermaid in the sun
Toss the worries of our hearts up and turn them into fun

We see, we hear, we feel it all, dear Anni.

I FIRST pressed the spotlight knob, then came in here dancing on my toes and feeling the wind off the sea, seeing the sands shifting in wonderful shapes and translucent patternings, shells rolling, crabs crawling and oh Anni you have thrown the whole scene at us and we are there, we see, we hear, we feel it all and dance in its rhythm and sing in the winds fanciful sweeps smelling the salt air and love it love it love it. Oh what a song of joy you have created here Anni, dear Anni. WONDERFUL. "I'll knock you on your back" and roll you over and have a most wonderful romp with you yes I will ! Just wait! From your mad friend Anushka

My beautiful Annushka & you would be right there too, I just know it... how carefree & joyful that would be eh?! It was written during a horrible time of heart break for me this one, but I was thinking about my women in my choir & how I would feel if it were one of them feeling like that... & this is what I came up with. You would love them I think, we are often wicked & laugh our heads off most irreverently much of the time... I sometimes record the sessions & the tapes (hah, how outdated that term is now) are full of explosions of laughter & hysteria between all the lovely harmony... I am very blessed, in the 7 years I have been leading that group there has NEVER been a mean soul, they have always quickly crept into my heart & I them, & there have been changes over time, but still, we always seem to get the best women in town all ages & styles, it is a beautiful community. hello

It is a beautiful song, Anni. I'd also like to see it in poem form. I can see how it could have turned from fun and whimsy to sorrowful. You always bring such beauty and love into your poems/lyrics. These are my favorite lines: In this place I feel abandoned, yet we’re all contained Sing me siren songs and dances, I will be sustained Clouds were angels always for me, even if it rained Swimming like a mermaid in the sun Toss the worries of our hearts up and turn it into fun Always, Cat

I will be back to pop this into poetry form as opposed to song

Dearest gentle Cat, thank you, you are always so kind. I will be back (have a big weekend of performances of all kinds starting tomorrow so a quick visit just now) to pop this into poetry form as opposed to song. I took it to the choir & they loved it, but I think they are a tad biased. Yes, I like the middle 3 lines of the ones you have picked here too. It doesn't take much to make me happy... I trained myself to be that way & it has paid off. Singing & dancing are particularly inspiring of joy don't you think? In good company especially, a bunch of really good women do wonders for melancholy. Take care Cat. asking evening to kiss me, it kind of merrits a persona & capita

Kelsey, I was OVERJOYED to see you here again, I have missed you terribly (& have had v little online time... noticed the other notice... will get to that soon too.. been working towards this festival weekend so it is nearly over)... Yay for Ewok visits!!! You always have such sensible input Kelsey... you are right, since I am asking evening to kiss me... it kind of merrits a persona... though it is wierd to me, it is almost like I am stating the obvious in my head... since I feel evening kisses me as it rises in this instance... do you know what I mean, I'm sure you would... but no, it isn't a typo for kiss me in the evening... though I am not averse to such with the one I love, but I digress. Now I need to think about the matter of question marks for the time place etc. (I do find it frustrating that I can't refer to the poem as I reply, I need to go back & look, my sense is that those words are part of a greater query, rhetorical or perhaps answered in itself... which doesn't mitigate having a questionmark somewhere... it is a good point you make (as always). I have run out of time here now, but I will come see what you have been up to (yum, can't wait!!!!, hope there is lots!) as soon as I recover from the weekend. Cheers Anni~ "When we feel love and kindness toward others, it not only makes others feel loved and cared for, but it helps us also to develop inner happiness and peace". H.H. the Dalai Lama

I’d love to hear it Anni.

I'd love to hear it Anni. I fancy myself a mermaid or a siren, depending on how I feel that day. Naughty or nice. You're both if you sing it. :-) Love & Hugs, Anna

your siren song is a potent poetry that often takes us under dea

Yes... I fancy you a mermaid & a siren for sure... in fact that is how I see you very much, your siren song is a potent poetry that often takes us under dear Anna... as potent as they come, that is exactly what I think that whole mythology was born to describe, a beauty or wisdom or both that was so devastating one could hardly bare to stay in this world in it's presence..... & you have it for sure... plus I don't care how often you suggest you feel like my mother, I always see you as gorgeously lascivious & graceful in my image you are 30's at most & walking on the beach or at least swept by it's winds as you gaze over a balcony to a brilliant sunset. But I confess to a bit of an obsession with sirens & have written too many songs referring to them.. I suppose I have my own connection to them, in a myriad of ways... Still I had a mandate to work this one, so I indulged. You would be most welcome in this mermaid frollic dear Anna, toss up a few worries & transform them in good company. As for hearing it... when the CD is finished (I wrote it for my choir & the new CD we are planning) I will see about getting a site you can visit with it on, there are several of my songs on it (will be) singers indulge me so! & a number of other siren & mermaid flavoured songs. Love the Siren song...

It dragged me under and made me like it! I just know that this song is going to be a hit! Your nature descriptions are spot on as per usual. Also made me think that maybe summer is finally getting under way. Good Images. HugBugs and Hig bugs to you, ~ Gee

glad you were able to visit the shores of siren sung wonder & me

Hiya Gee, thanks you sweet thing, I am glad you were able to visit the shores of siren sung wonder & mermaid abandonment, it is a good place to spend a little time I think... & yes almost some warmth, though I still have the heater on most of the time! still only between 10 & 15 degrees celsius, I'm afraid... though the school newsletter is advertising bushfire prevention sessions already, I suspect the heat will fast bloom & suddenly we will be at the lake as often as possible (mermaid spotting no doubt). Be well dear Gee & write lots so I can read them when I am over frantic performance season.. Sing a song of praises...

Well if it ever get to the production desk and is recorded ... I'll get it :) I like the chorus line as the repeat refain is so light and is easy on the tongue in recital, with a great roll and flow. The song lyrics themselves are well structured and the meter is good to keep rhythmatics and pitch, with smooth flowing rhyme. With you living on an island (much like me!) even if it is the largest one on the planet gives you the natural ability to write about a water theme with added mermesque traits that add a great human touch and actually reminds me of the film splash (although not in the cheese sense lol!) and has agreat happy and reflective view stance of the world... happy always when liquid nurishment is provided. A great song indeed... got to let have a listen if gets recorded, well that is if you don't mind of course :) Dale :)

Dear Dale, you are always so encouraging, thank you... It is way past my curfew, with a seriously full on 4 days (of singing & directing & more) ahead (& still some complex songs to commit to memory for an opera... that will be a first.. only in the chorus, am not an opera singer), so I will come back to this.. just wanted to say thanks Cheers Anni~ "When we feel love and kindness toward others, it not only makes others feel loved and cared for, but it helps us also to develop inner happiness and peace". Kiss me Evening, take my heart

These are beautiful lyrics. Full, rich, and filled with emotion and visual stimulation. OH I would just LOVE to hear this sung by your choir. This verse: "Kiss me Evening, take my heart, I’m so willing to give in I’m finding this human skin such an awful state to live in Blistered fingers, caved in dreams, yet I can’t help forgiving Swimming like a mermaid in the sun Toss the worries of our hearts up and turn them into fun" Kiss me Evening ... I just love that. Love it. So very very pleased to have found this remarkable write tonight. Thank you. ~Pamela

Swimming In This Skin

Five stars, I quite liked the repetition of those two lines, it was enough to hold the whole work together. And the words rolled off the tongue with more pleasure than if they hadn't been there. You say it is a song, and so it should be. I read it aloud for the first time tonight. It's almost like a kind of Gospel song, as if by mistake: "Swimming like a mermaid in the sun Toss the worries of our hearts up and turn them into fun..." The mermaid in the sun something that Lorca might have thought of. If you havn't read him, everybody must read Federico Garcia Lorca. No worries about this poem at all. It was a pleasure to read. I even loved the title which attracted me immediately to this work. Love Dalton.
