The Gambler

Gambler by nature, I just have to see
what awesome sight is around that next bend.
Tis a matter of curiosity.

How will the cards fall today, royal flush?
Four of a kind would be fine, queens or kings,
no worry,  aces high, full-boat, a rush.

Make a date with destiny and look ‘round
the next corner.  Wanderlust has me seized
in its marvelous grip.  I’ll cover ground—

hear the empty noise of wind rushing past,
rain beating down, goals enough for today.
Fast as I can, I’ll live stories that last.

Time to change direction for the next curve;
toss the coin and we’ll see which way to go.
From the road, straight and narrow, I’ll not swerve—

find the path that leads over that next hill,
toss the dice and hope for lucky seven,
take wing for home and watch for one last thrill.

I’ll gamble the pot on that final ride,
throw in all my chips for a winning hand;
the vast world I’ve seen, the great world I’ve tried.

Hi Jayne

I'm glad this gave you some vicarious pleasure. It was sort of fun to write. We stop at quite a few, because we can get parking for the big rig. Usually, they have good and reasonable food plus in Nevada, free drinks, so we don't go away with nothing. It seems they have tightened up a bit, though, recently. But there is an energy that is quite addicting. Always glad to see you. Yours, Dee

Yes, it was fun to write.

It came quite easily. It's such an up and down, downright bi-polar. But, as I told Jayne, above, we get more benefits from the casinos than the occasional win. I would still like to know about your picture. Where did you find it? Is it available somewhere? Or is it exclusive? I love unicorns and she is enchanting. Yours, Dee

The only time I ever gambled

(apart from revealing my love to my wife, heehee) was one night when we went to play the slots in Gary. I spent fifty, won nothing, and with each tumble of the coins all I could think of was how I could have turned the fifty I was throwing away into a hundred. Guess I'm not a gambler :) But I liked your poem Dee, especially the end! Respectfully Jim "Laws and rules don't kill freedom: narrow-minded intolerance does" : Race

Hi Jim

It used to be kind of fun. But it seems they've all tightened the slots. If we don't win with $40, we quit. If we can break even, we're happy, and, if in Nevada, have had free drinks. (This is always on an overnight layover, by the way.) But that is harder to do now, and it's not as fun. Illinois and Iowa and others I suppose, but Iowa, especially, which is in our path frequently, serve one oz per 1/2 hour, period---and you have to have a shot over ice (can you believe that?). You can't buy a double and they are expensive. So what's new? Rules and regulations spoiling the good times. For me, the poem was as much about the gamble of new sights, new jobs, new experiences---the 'wanderlust'. I always appreciate your comments. I always laugh when I see one of your heehee's. Always, Deelilah
