Cemetery Road

Cemetery Road
(Happy Halloween)

Don't walk home by the cemetery
Their mother would always scold
When, after school, they visited friends
Everyday they had been told

But one evening John said to Jimmy
Let's take Cemetery Road
Jim said, "John, you know Mom won't like it."
John told Jim he was a toad

John said "Jim, now that we are older
We won't get a bad case of the creeps
Mom only wanted to protect us
From not being able to sleep

But Jimmy wouldn't listen to him,
And the sky was growing black
So the boys went their separate ways,
But Jim hoped John would turn back

Although Jimmy's route was the longer,
Jim was the one to arrive
Poor Mother was worried and frightened
Sure that John hadn't survived

"Oh why had Johnny disobeyed her?"
We heard his mother bemoan.
When the town searched the cemetery
John's name was on a headstone.

At night you can hear poor John wailing
Many of the townsfolk say,
"If you walk by the cemetery,
Do it by the light of day."

Cat, a halloween poem!

I love it, it's the perfect tale to read to kids on Halloween night! I love Halloween, and my son starts talking about it in midsummer every year. He has already made himself a costume. I think I will take out my black latex pants again and just do something wild to my hair this year ;) Have already cooked the first pumpkin soup by the way, but will have to cook another one soon, when we make our Jack-o-lantern. Hmh, and pumpkin pie... There, now you've set me off. Yours, ~Nina

Haunting

This is a great poem, perfectly told tale and keeps the reader gripped all the way through. My son is going to love this...he is so fascinated by the darker side of things...don't know who he gets it from? Great rhyming - a fine piece, Happy All Hallows’ Eve HS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "With all that I am and all that I could be, I walk this earth and yet nobody sees me".

Dear Caitlin:

Oooo, that was a spooky poem! I still remember my younger years when we boys used to challenge each other with silly contests like the one in your poem. Now that I see reality, it really scares me to pieces. Thank you for your beautiful poem, I felt very good and warm inside when I read it, Sincerely, Hugo

Hello Hugo

I'm glad you enjoyed reading my little Halloween poem. So, You were an adventurous boy back in the day! I always envied people who had a spooky old abandoned house in their neighborhood. Always, Caitlin

Dear Caitlin:

Exactly as you've said. There was an old, huge, abandoned house at the corner where I used to live in the Northern part of Peru. Your intuition was right on the money, because we usually got in trouble with our parents because of our subrepticious incursions to the house. It was full of bats and owls. And we used to play indians and cowboys for hours. I was already a U.S.-TV- freak by then, lol. Best Regards, Hugo

Creepy and a spooky!

Aaaawwwwwwwwww now this is an amazing atmospheric write that tales a tale, sets the scene, scares the wits out of you and makes you peer out from behind the sofa and think are the ghosts and ghoulies going to get me????!!! If you are to believed then yet... and I believe because this poem is so vivid in its imagery that it made me shudder and look over my shoulder! Excellent theme, wordplay, rhyming and story all wrapped up in a trick or treat bag and handed to the reader, of which a great big jack in the box springs out and leaves reaching for the fish slice to peel your skin off the ceiling! Excellent write from you Cat, and you seem to have a knack for pen such wonders! Your like a fan... wafting the chills over the readers, and I am a fan of you! A* from me with a big thumbs up! Dale :)

Hey Dale!

You are very kind to me with your praises and I just gobble it all up, lol. I am in danger of getting too big an ego. But that's okay because sooner or later I will write a piece of crap and get taken down a peg or two. Thanks for everything! Always, Cat

Creepy

and fun, Cat! Halloween is one of my favorite seasons--although I've heard that the cemetery is the safest place to be since everyone's dead! That line "And you can still hear John wailing", ah! Some sincerely macabre stuff--I always thought horror poetry had gone out with Poe or Joseph Payne Brennan. Fun stuff! Eerie. GB

I'm so glad you enjoyed it! My favorite holiday, too. My male alter ego writes horror poetry and shares my page with me. His name is Edge (published under the name of Eddy Styx) and he will be posting again very soon... maybe even today. Always, Cat

This time of year

is enchanting in so many ways, not least of which, the colors and crisp air and pumpkin pie. It makes me sad too, because winter is all too soon. 'Oh well, the warm days are over' (words from Dylan Thomas or Bob Dylan, can't remember who). Anyway, jack-o-lantern-days are my favorite (I'm old enough to wear orange). I thought this was a fun Halloween story, a very nice ballad type rhyme. These cemetery, spooky, images, I like. It's fantastical enough to remove itself from life's real gore, yet creepy enough to satisfy that dark urge. I liked the 'Headless Horseman'. Now, I just read your next poem by Edge. That is over the edge of gore for me, troubling in its stark reality. A good example of what comes around goes around, though, huh? Yours, Deelilah

Hi Deelilah

The Headless Horseman is one of my favorite spooky tales from when I was a child! Thanks for reading both poems. I know that "Hitchhiker" was a wee bit over the top, LOL. Have yourself a Happy Halloween. Always, Cat
