A HOUSE IN FLAMES

A HOUSE IN FLAMES   Ramadan kareem came to a graceful end The faithful extolled the enduring gains From strength of will to health and longevity Thanksgiving preceded the sharing feast Praise be unto him who gives us life   A once peaceful day erupted into bedlam As thronging crowd arrived to behold the specs A house is gone, the conflagration before our eyes Praise him even in our deepest sorrows For there are painful lessons we must learn   Smouldering wood, white smoke of sacrifice Frantic scampering and helpless calls for aid Long drawn battle of dark smoke soared high With wild red flames which engulfed the roof As we watched with feeble heart the inferno   The hidden hand of the arsonist was abetted By the road cut off by selfish local council men With frustrating obstacle impeding a belated rescue Fire engines took a detour along bumpy muddy road With little water not enough to quench the blaze   Darkness descended and engulfed us all We were lost in the dark smoke when night came Treasured items were reduced to huge vestiges Stranded families rendered homeless in a twinkle Just like that before our very eyes…

We had four day's rest, a weekend and the first two days of the week. It went on well till the unexpected happened. 21 and 22 September, 2009 were declared public or bank holidays to mark the end of Ramadan. The house opposite ours was gutted by fire on the evening of Tuesday, 21 September, 2009. The shock and disbelief prompted the scribble 'A House in Flames'. Thank you for the comments and for stopping by to read. Best wishes. T.
