The Girl With Wings: A Tale of Overcoming the Odds

The Girl With Wings: A Tale of Overcoming the Odds When the girl with wings was born, Her mother and father cried And told her they would love her no matter what she looked like. Her doctor explained to them That sometimes these mistakes occurred in nature, For reasons no one knew. "She will probably never walk," He told them. "It is almost impossible for a child With wings to learn to walk." But her mother and father decided At that moment that she WOULD walk, That she would overcome this, That she would lead a normal life. So they took their daughter home, And from the very first they told her That she was no different from anyone else. They held her firmly to the ground, And slapped her gently when she rose into the air. "You are strong." And the little girl with wings grew, And learned to walk, And learned to speak without singing [as people with wings are not to do.] Sometimes she came home crying Because other kids had talked about wanting to fly. "Don't listen to them," her parents said. "You are beautiful in spite of your wings." Yes, she was. And after a while, She forgot that she even had those wings, And they hung, forgotten, Between her beautiful blades Like flowers from a lover She didn't want.

Once again! You know I

Once again! You know I expect nothing else from you, DS, but this perfection of your poetic story-telling. ~A

favorite kind

that is definitely my favorite kind of poetry to write. it can be the most outrageous story and plug it into a poem and it ends in beauty beyond belief. lotsa hugs -diatom

Diatom Shells,

I love the child with wings analogy, there was a famous writer who wrote a book about children and their education with the title "Wings of a child". Her name was Edith Nesbit, and I adored her books as a child (still do). Your story is as near to perfect as it gets. And I'm in love with yet another of your poems. Yours, ~Nina

Yes you do tell stories

Yes you do tell stories well, I am not sure about this being other than pure fiction even though the idea of someone being born with wings gives us a strangely lovely feeling, not as if she were born with an ugly impediment, so the wings could become an adornment. Did you ever read Mervyn Peake's Mr. Pye" ? There wings grow on the religious fanatic as he combs up proselytes, well I won't spoil it but it has to do with those two subjects, a very amusing and interesting insight to people of different character. Do you wish you had wings, I do! Love Ann of Norway
