Lox and Soulfood
Funny watching my middle aged ass
wiggle and jiggle to "Hey now you're a rockstar."
dancing on top the dining room table
with only hot pink panties flashing in the mirror
years growing up in Queens
laughing remembering my idiosyncrasies and angst
the time I lost my Bozo lunch box
announced over the school PA system
which I deliberately left outside Ms. Maggios 1st grade class
yes the bright face red haired clown box belonged to me
what can you do growing up in my side of Queens
the awkward pointed Dr. Scholls shoes
my folks felt appropriate for at that time narrow feet and those olive oil legs
Yikes!
my growing up in Queens
in the sixties
in a predominately Jewish neighborhood
listening to Mrs. Goldstein, Mrs. Weinstein and Ms. Lucille dish the gossip
peeking at Dr. Gottesman and his hippy wife smoking weed
growing up in Queens meant knowing who was the yenta in the hood
laughing at the Weinstein's speaking yiddish
their favorite expression "oy vey."
it meant eating daddies twist on Gefilte Fish and the best Matzah ball soup ever
running down the street to the bakery for first loaf of Challah
our house was Lox and soulfood
reading "Joys of Yiddish" and "Malcolm X" (hysterical)
growing up in Queens meant listening to the Monkees on CBS
pops Billy Eckstine records
my mother and her country music (Lord have mercy)
falling asleep to the milkman's matinee
saturday night parties across town at mamas house
watching my folks get down to King Curtis
growing up in Queens meant that first back park kiss
and having your first kick ass fight with the new kids
it meant Goodies luncheonette
Jays Diner
Gabys pizzeria
Jerrys Jewish Delicatessen
and me loving being me
