Black Dog Mind

Black Dog Mind
(for Jayne)

Black dog barks
at the black dwarf,
a star which can
no longer emit light.
Like that star,
my energy is waning
away to nothingness as
depression takes its bite.
Black dog howls
outside my window,
letting me know
of his presence.
I'm not likely
to forget this
black dog of despair,
feeding on my darkest
emotions and thoughts.
He follows me down
the tunnels of timeless,
anguished hopelessness,
in my darkest hour,
dogging my every footfall,
attracted to my depression.
He invades my sleep
by entering my dreams,
bringing fear and
paranoia into my slumber,
Where, perhaps, I can turn the tide,
dreaming up the forceful effort
to strangle this black dog
with the rope of its own tail.

Does it scare the cat ?

I really empathised with this one Cat...particularly liked the lines He follows me down the tunnels of timeless, anguished hopelessness, but the last two lines were resilient and brought a smile to me to strangle this black dog with the rope of its own tail. ...even when you are down you are fighting! Well done

Dear Car

It's amazing: When a poet writes about the particular, always comes up with a universal point of view. You have transformed a banal and common, sad event, into a sentiment many have had, when at night something keeps gnawing the mind. Regards and Healing, Hugo

Strangle This Black Dog With The Rope Of Its Own Tail

Wow, Cat, what a great ending you have come up with! I'll say it is a powerful poem, giving one hope and determination to fight the black dogs of depression and despair. Loved the last lines (how great indeed), gave me a touch of strength and joy. Have faced the black dog many a times in my life, and happy that I have managed to strangle him with its own tail... Enjoyed it alot... Thanks a lot for sharing. Glad I read this. Sincerely, Wafi "Culture, location and beliefs; All vanish with love!" ~Afzal Shauq~

Rings lots of bells Cat

Loved the poem for its simplicity and yet depth of honesty which is almost matter of fact and conversational in places despite the inevitable hopelessness that thoughts of a depressive episode conjure up. Can't think of anything i would suggest changing although i guess if it was me i would probably have extended the dog-like metaphors even further...but that's me lol. Love Keith

It is wonderful to hear(read) from you! My wish for you is to never hear the howls of that black dog. I hope that you will have the time to be writing and posting your poetry again. Many of us have missed you terribly... the place just isn't the same without you. Love, Cat

Been being chased by my own

Been being chased by my own black dog lately. I wondered why I feel so depressed, sad... lonely... could it be that we really are all One? And that on occasion we actually FEEL one another's feelings...across the universe? Must be so. And here we are. Love, Anna
