zen walking on Ridge road

grey clouds hang low, mist the air,
groan

i walk with purpose
a loaf of bread,
some half & half, tomatoes
and a senior coffee at Burger King
the cashier tells me her story,
I tell her mine, I notice the flag
of the United States of America
is dirty and ripped along the edges
tell her it's time for new one,
she says it's blowing half-mast
for Senator Kennedy,
now I know why I never noticed
the shape our flag was in,
I think about the stories of families
the hidden details, the pain no one sees,
the years that are stolen away but come
home to roost, sooner or later when the
years of the locust have turned into poems,

I think about how I don't buy anything I don't need,
walking, I have more than enough to carry with two green-bags
of anything,
I think about all the dress alteration shops in my square mile,
the two Polish stores, the Iranian one and how it doesn't
matter, really, if the women wear a Hijab or Burqa, they're
just women buying produce,
like me,
I think about how some days I hit all the lights just right
and some days I wait along with the raindrops.

Anna

Sorry have missed a few of your poems and stories therein of late, but with you there is no problem as the flow is great, the words are great and the theme is great. Waiting in the raindrops is a time to watch that life is sometimes to fast. Lovely write as per, Yours Ian.T

I don't know what to say, as this poem has certainly knocked me off my pins. I have often noticed the horrid state of our flag, outside of businesses and it angers me. Senator Kennedy... such a good man... Always, Cat

Thank you all for reading,

Thank you all for reading, didn't quite get soaked this morning, (I adore warm Spring rain the most) though it was raining, and contrary to public opinion, I didn't melt. ;-) Hugs of Love, Anna

Dear Anna,

For years upon years, Canadians found it difficult to identify who they were. More than French and English. An industrial modern state, but there seemed so many. The most complex democracy in the world, yet that seemed no asset. We hated being the haulers of water and hewers of trees. In those years, we comforted ourselves that we were not, definitely not, the U.S.A. It was one of those discriminatory compliments. We, the mouse, worried about every twitch of the elephant, determined that we were proud that we didn't want to roll over and squish the poor beast. Prior to the latest of the Bushes, that stance changed. We described ourselves in assertive terms, rather than in what we were not. We invented peace keeping, play hockey, are multicultural, bilingual, own medicare, harbour the most complex democracy in the world, have gone metric, have the most dynamic economy in the western world, support our allies but not to the extreme, involve conscience in foreign policy, and are the world's leading immigration destination per capita. In short, we decided that we like ourselves. American's scare the shit out of us. That win one for the Gipper, we have the biggest thermonuclear penis, train the marines (if nothing else) to pull the trigger, Fox news, why not elect George W. Bush, free trade until it doesn't help us, spy the hell out of everybody, simply scares the shit out of us all (except Albertans). And yet we like you guys and gals. We hope for you. We watch CNN, disgusted that it isn't the CBC, addicted all the same, and happy when it switches without chagrin from leaning Republican to supporting health care reform. We gasp at your deficits but think this amazing new President is doing the right things. We think that America has reinvented itself electing Obama past the stereotypes, the civil war history, past the bigotry - for it was the middle class that ensured his election. And we want to say things are going to get better. Thinking softly about you. Brian

Dear Brian, your words leave

Dear Brian, your words leave a lump in my throat. My children are first-born Americans. I have no sense of history really...neither American...Hungarian...or German.....Austrian....French... *I* could have been anyone. However, it amazes me and gives me profound hope that the world is never lost when, regardless of our nationality, ethnicity, sex or sexual persuasion, our religion, education or intelligence, we *do the right thing*...consciously and with a sense of conscience. Thank you Brian, you would do well speaking for Canadians, even if I think you made light of Albertans. (I'm not going there ;-) Thank you for your kindness. Eventually, all the diplomacy in the world comes down to being kind & choosing to build a better world for all its inhabitants. Like Neopoet, the world is vast, but incredibly small, close & intimate when we cantouchoneanotherthisclose. ~A

by the time..

by the time I read this to the end I forgot wat the title was and I was trying to think of the word to descrbe how I felt..peaceful? silent? and then I scrolled to the top and read the title again and the feeling I had was the same as when I sat for a straight hour in front of a japanese zen garden staring at the perfect parallel lines with the white stones getting lost in meditation your piece made me think and feel this. you are truly an amazing artist anna. -diatom shells

...ridge road... poem

~A, I've been low for some time. No composition,or participation. Then, I come in to Neopoet, and you are one of the few poets I must find and read. In Zen, all of this ugliness and beauty are one, naturally. Your poem is wonderful. wcw

Chyrs, Diatom thank you for

Chyrs, Diatom thank you for your words. I'll remember them when I feel less than whole, less than worthy of your kind thoughts. WCW, know that you are in my heart. And your life is a poem. Write it. And put it to music, sing it with the heart only you have. Love to All, Anna
