Wednesday's Highlight
Amidst the sickness
the gloom
and the coughing
you hear a rumble
some banging
and you squeal
"Bin men!" and smile
Rushing to the doorstep
we sit and wait for them
to turn the corner
to our road
poised we are, for waving
As they round the bend
these flourescent men
who toil so thanklessly
are given a skip in their step
at the sight of you
brandishing orange spade
windmill and a winning grin
Such glee you experience
in the passing of them
such joy you gift them
these grown men
skipping, waving, smiling
reminded perhaps
of their own children
their own childhood
they glow
at feeling appreciated
and I'm inclined to believe
that this highlight
of our day
is the highlight of theirs
the gloom
and the coughing
you hear a rumble
some banging
and you squeal
"Bin men!" and smile
Rushing to the doorstep
we sit and wait for them
to turn the corner
to our road
poised we are, for waving
As they round the bend
these flourescent men
who toil so thanklessly
are given a skip in their step
at the sight of you
brandishing orange spade
windmill and a winning grin
Such glee you experience
in the passing of them
such joy you gift them
these grown men
skipping, waving, smiling
reminded perhaps
of their own children
their own childhood
they glow
at feeling appreciated
and I'm inclined to believe
that this highlight
of our day
is the highlight of theirs
