Judas Tells Jesus His Dreams
[series of two poems]
I dream of the girl you resurrected.
She wakes and asks for something to eat,
But we have no food.
You give her your hand.
It flakes like white fish between her teeth.
~
I dream of Mary Magdalene.
She sifts her thirst through a skull.
She sleeps in the desert
And lets the sand rasp her clean.
I dream that the blind man opens his eyes.
You ask if he can see.
He stares at me and says,
I see men as trees, walking,
I dream that Lazarus' dog is mine,
And follows me everywhere.
He will not leave me alone.
I dream that the adulteress walks the streets,
Stones sewn into her dress.
She says,
We are civilized,
We are civilized,
We pave the roads we walk on.
~
I dream that I am kissing you,
And suddenly my tongue flicks out,
Silver as a minnow
That darts between your legs in a lake.
And you back away.
I dream that you are strung
Up on my body.
I see men as trees, walking.
I dream that you leave me,
And I am a diaspora of eyes,
Watching you go.
