Pushing It Down

The most transient of things

my heart held on tightly

to what you were passing through

Still, you could have lied to me

Your second in command

didn’t need the truth

because you were my coin

We searched our intuitions

but couldn’t find a fastening

I sought comfort in the fleeting things

because they were predictable

You found comfort in knowing

someone would be there in the morning

to admire the feelings you had collected

I collected old, inanimate things

to listen to the lives of those who loved

the beautiful objects I had found

I miss you more on autumn days

Because I cannot stop the unyielding rain

or find shelter from the rending tears

That lacerate this charlatan of stone

You still don’t know what love means

to those who push it down

Hoping the light from the surface

will not break over them
