Edge of Sanity

Edge of Sanity

Standing on a razor's edge
again,try not to fall
Wondering if you have the strength
to carry on at all

The razor cuts and heart's blood bleeds
into the darkened mind
The edge can filet you to the bone
in cuts so thin and fine

While the voice of reason dies
to your lost sanity
you lose the touch that binds you
to this humanity

You grasp at the shattered bits
as your mind flies asunder
Fall down a bottomless well
lost now within the thunder

Those you love sit helplessly
as you ride out the wave
The madness like a storm-tossed sea
makes you rant and rave

Standing here on the razor's edge
your blood pounding in your veins
While visions dance within your eyes
and your mind explodes in flames

Those you love sit helplessly
as you ride out the wave
The madness like a storm-tossed sea
prompts you to rant and rave

You know why 'Revolution' by the beatles was a hit? Because it was a refreshing change from their bubble gum pop. This is also a different side of you. It can best be reviewed by a poet who has followed your mentality as a leader in this site and an artist of purity and sanity. Darkness is always darker coming out of the light. In sharp contrast to your lighter side, this is especially profound in its obscurity and depth...in fact, a bit abstract. My first impression of it is perhaps a father's hopelessness for his child's addiction. I'm sure I'm totally off. btw... 7th line...should it be 'filet'? ...good one Rett PINT :)

Thanks Pint

I appreciate it. 7th line...hmm, nope I meant to use flay, but darn it, now you give me a better word. I like that. Will change it. Thanks! Actually just a weird mood tonight and kind of let my mind go where it would. Glad you liked it and I appreciate the critique. I maybe wrong Rett but this

I maybe wrong Rett but this seems like a write about living with those that are afflicted by mental illness, brilliant telling from an outsiders point of view , I just read this aloud and I only have a couple of suggestions as I am time limited doc's appointment LOL You grasp at the shattered bits as swirling mind [rolls] asunder --- Replaced your with swirling and flies with [rolls] they are just ideas to get it to flow a bit better ... and just ideas lol [Tumbling] into the bottomless well lost within the thunder ---- for All in all a vivid telling of what its like to live with someone with a mental illness sad but true ... Loved it though Rett and it is different from your normal fare ... Love Jayne x x

Rett,

Once again, your work amazes me. I stumbled a bit in a few places. But when i went back for the re-read, i only saw one thing i thought of... - "Those you love sit helplessly as you ride the wave The madness like a storm-tossed sea makes you rant and rave" how about if you say "as you ride out the wave"? to me, "ride out" seems more complete. nothing else i can see. thank you for sharing. I can personally relate to this, not only because I am a victim of mental illness (under medication) but because I have a sister who has the same affliction, only she refuses to admit that there is a problem and therefore goes unmedicated. There are times when the situation is so frustrating that after I have been in contact with her I experience migraine headaches. I have always been able to relate to the old term, "walking the razor's edge." These lines really ring true: While the voice of reason dies lost to insanity you lose the touch that binds you to this humanity You grasp at the shattered bits as your mind flies asunder Falling down a bottomless well lost within the thunder Thanks for writing this. Always, Cat *edit- oops, I forgot to answer the questions. I very much like the title, it kind of says it all. The theme is one that I can very much relate to and am curious as to others take on this situation.

Thanks so much Cat

I have a wonderful wife and a daughter that both suffer from bi-polar disorder,(medicated) of course. I talk to them extensively and try my best to understand how they feel. It isn't something they can help, but all of us have to live with it so understanding is the first order of business. I won't say there are not times I would like to throw up my hands and walk away, but those are rare these day. Could you walk away from those you love just because they have a problem? I can't and besides, my wife has stuck by me through thick and thin. Heart attacks, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, surgeries and my feeling sorry for myself at times. Thirty-four years and counting. *S* Sometimes I do wonder if she will have the strength to carry on. When I wrote this it wasn't consciously, I was just letting my mind lead me where it would, then came to realize that is where it lead me. Thanks so much for reading and understanding. Rett, Thanks for sharing a part of yourself, and doing such an awesome job of it, I loved the portrayal~ _____________________________________________________ Income-tax forms should be more realistic by allowing the taxpayer to list "Uncle Sam" as a dependent Anonymous

Rett,

this must have been hard to write... you did a good job, both with the writing and the portraying of the feelings, I think. Your flow is always very good to begin with, but I think you could even improve it here by just a few changes: Standing on a razor’s edge (again, try) not to fall Wondering if you have the strength to carry on at all The razor cuts and (heart's blood) bleeds into the darkened mind The edge can filet you to the bone in cuts (so) thin and fine While the voice of reason dies (to your lost) sanity you lose the touch that binds you to this humanity You grasp at the shattered bits as your mind flies asunder (Fall) down a bottomless well lost (now) within the thunder Standing (here) on the razor’s edge (your) blood pounding in your veins While visions dance within your eyes and your mind explodes in flames Those you love sit helplessly as you ride out the wave The madness like a storm-tossed sea (prompts) you (to) rant and rave Those are just suggestions, of course, you know the name of the game: Take it or leave it, whatever strikes you as useful. Yours, ~Nina

Thanks so much. You will never see me turn down a chance to improve! Each of these works perfectly, if they didn't I wouldn't use. I truly appreciate it. Wow what can I say, you sure have a good understanding of mental illness, I wish more people did. And while some of us are ranting and raving, we have no clue what is going on and do not understand others reactions. Its not fun to live inside your head while the world goes by and you struggle for the energy to just get going. Patty

Yes a quiet break sounds is most assurdly what the doctor would order. Less stress. But your love for your family in the comments is well expressed. Good read, sad, but real and good. Scarlet

the razor's edge

this one really hit home... mental illness takes so many forms, physiological, emotional - the scars of the past that haunt so many. this is something i live with, from the other side, and the double entendre here for me is that the razor's edge isn't only walked by those who are mentally ill but also by those of us who love them. that said, a small change, for me, would be very profound and reflect this reality, but of course, you should reject it if you don't agree 8) how about in the 2nd last verse, intead of Standing here on the razor’s edge your blood pounding in your veins While visions dance within your eyes and your mind explodes in flames it were Standing here on the razor’s edge my blood pounding in my veins While visions dance within your eyes and your mind explodes in flames A small change, "your" to "my"... but, I feel, with large impact. Happy to be back and rid, I hope, of our stalker! Virginia
