Excuse me while I Die

Everything you do has its shadow Everytime you are untrue to yourself
you die a little
In life
death comes in small doses

There have been times when Ismiledwhile the bile inside meburnt;laughedwhile every muscle in my faceached;spokewhile  every word I utteredstuck to my palate;was polite and said nice things to peoplethat had the ringof a  funeral drum;died  while all the timeI should have been living

Leonard...

this poem spoke to me, for me, it is indeed a universal truth that even the most honest will succumb to... eventually, if not sooner we all will taste the nasty untruth of our own words, but few will admit it... what a wonderful write! the title... excuse while I die... did you mean excuse me? Leonard,

I think we all know the feeling you describe, but few of us would be able to phrase it that elegantly. Yours, ~Nina

You know how I feel,

You know how I feel, Leonard... In The Light, Anna Troof ~ Shawn Phillips (70's artist) And the truth shall make you free And the light is all around us Even though some people really couldn't give it a damn But those people gonna find out that the world Is here to feel And oh my God I do feel real, feel so real, real Take my heart and lead me through Will you be with me tomorrow? Spinning my soul with all your love and care And if you do decide to leave me Then you must know the way I feel And oh my God I do feel real, feel so real, real Since the time I saw your face I have wondered how to touch you Bright light shining through the depths Of my very core And if you do decide to leave me I will lose my even keel But I'll still know I did feel real, felt so real, real And the truth shall make us free And I speak of a love unending Even though some people really won't give it a chance But we are here to make it stronger For as many as want to feel And oh my God, we could be real, could be real, real unfortunately this video is not available, however this is his voice, his style": Some of his music http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAUCrJO-43A "It is unwise to be too sure of one's own wisdom. It is healthy to be reminded that the strongest might weaken and the wisest might err." Mahatma Gandhi

Leonard

Loved the title and opening line - though I echo Moonie's question on whether the title was supposed to have a 'me' in it. Sometimes words come back to bite us in the ass - I know I've had it happen several times. Your poem conveys that thought well. ~Jess K. ----------------------- "Why worry? There should be laughter after pain. There should be sunshine after rain. These things have always been the same. So why worry now?" - Dire Straits

Thank you Jess

I think most of us experience this several times in our lives. It can be really painful when it comes back to us. Leonard

But that shadow was very bright......

For those you had a smile, those you spoke to, and related with, at least while doing that, you have been a shining life! Best compliments for your poem!albix

Wow Leonard

its been a while since I read any poetry, but this is good. Your title brought me to read and that first line about dying in small doses is so true. And I read on... I like it!

very nice...

~was polite and said nice things to people that had the ring of a funeral drum;~ ^^^^^^ This's a great job, so truthful and the metaphors were more than expressive. Very nicely penned.

Leonard,

life is truly lived when there is truth! Not of others but of ourselves. I have always tried to look into myself, sometimes it isn't easy, just as you have pointed out. Great write, as a remember to continue searching ourselves. thanks, Eddie

Dear Leonard,

You have caught a some lovely flowers of life and hold them in this poem. I can remember a time when my working life actually made me feel like I was dragging myself to death. And I would come across others who were in much greater desperation than me; Bankers covered in psychosomatic related dermatitis so sever as to deform and enduring this penitence for family and duty. You are kneading the germ in the wheat of poetry: those shared truths that either enable use to continue with more insight or allows us to understand why we need change the pathos of our step. Congratulations on the wonderful product of your brain and the deserving recognition it is receiving. Brian

Hi Brian

Life is a real drip, a drag, a death so to speak when we are not living it. We should remember that being alive is not enough. We have to live. Thanks a million for the most discerning read and appreciation. Leonard

Excuse me while I Die

Leonard, Absolutely loved this one! Most of us would not be honest enough to admit to ourselves that we have experienced these feelings. Very worthy of the spotlight congratulations my friend! ______________________________________________________ Income-tax forms should be more realistic by allowing the taxpayer to list "Uncle Sam" as a dependent Anonymous

The measure of a human is

The measure of a human is how much pain, anguish, sorrow, fear, one can hold in a human heart. The measure of a poet is how a poem can cross the barrier of *I* and *Thou*. I am reminded of Ram Dass: "To hold all this in one's heart is inexpressible." The poet is pretty good in expressing it, eh, Leonard? "It is unwise to be too sure of one's own wisdom. It is healthy to be reminded that the strongest might weaken and the wisest might err." Mahatma Gandhi

There is so much wisdom in your words. I love the quote. It reminds me of what Adam Smith says in Powers of the Mind "The way which can be described is not the way". Leonard

we all die a little everyday

and we all live a little everyday you've captured the inherent duality that chains us to this level with such elegance and simplicity i recognise that the path isn't easy and i salute your effort and generosity in sharing with us so that we may know we're not alone in the daily business of living and dying

Excuse me while I Die

I thought this poem was very insightful and showed how many a times we don't say how we truly feel about life.Letting your true inward thoughts being known can give you and others a clearer perspective of your conscience. Life is short, why not speak with truth? I enjoyed reading your poem.
