She Sells Sea Shells By The Sea Shore

SHE SELLS SEA SHELLS BY THE SEA SHORE

In the Indian Kingdom, the King's big blue wigwam

Did him just fine as a home

But his quiet life was shattered - the Queen had him battered!

She wanted a castle of stone!

"We don't have enough stone" said the King with a groan

Peering at her through black eyes

"And it's much cheaper rent if we live in a tent

So to move - is that really so wise?"

But they packed up their things (Queens have always ruled kings)

And set off to find castle rocks

Had to fight their way north, reached the wide Firth of Forth

And then paddled across in their socks.

The Queen let out a yell - she'd stood on a sharp shell

But it looked nice. She cried "Bring me more"

And by 5 past 11, she'd sold 47

She was selling sea shells by the score!

The sea shells that she'd sell had a strange fishy smell

But that only made them appear fresher

Even three free fruit flies who were buzzing on by

Were attracted to piles of shell treasure.

The sea shore shells store had a damp sandy floor

And a bolt and a lock and a key

With the polis from Leith (and a dog with sharp teeth)

To guard the store (and the money).

After 6 months of selling sea shells (and some herring)

The King counted up all his cash

Cried "We've sold enough shells, let's buy some hotels

But first let's all have a quick wash.

And so it came to pass, that the Queen (she's some lass!)

Was able to buy a stone castle

The King was quite pleased, as the gates were well greased

And would swing shut with no squeak or rattle.

So if you get a job that is bad, makes you sob

Remember the Queen and her castle

For it's all up to you, and the things that you do

You can make your life happy - no hassle!

My dear RAVEN, at this moment there is a red glow over the south-west of Scotland, a reflection of my blushing cheeks at your kind words. Kindest Regards Ian Thomson (Tam the Chanter)

I'm trying to recall something I read once . . .

" I see words as diamonds in the rough; having potential to be used or discarded at the poet’s whim I see vocabulary as the first cut of these rough diamonds, where the exposed quality of some may be cherished I see language as the final cut and polish of these stones I am convinced that poetry is the creation of the necklace by the skill of the poet Unfortunately most of what I have read so far does not go beyond the clever use of vocabulary " Right now I'd settle for the latter. --Jonathan Annoying the world, one person at a time (Group discounts available)

Update

I do not, as a rule, duplicate posts. This is necessary in my mind due to subsequent participants in these discussions. ------------------- Just a quick note. Ian and I had a misunderstanding. Ian made some bold points in a blog post and I misunderstood the thrust of his argument. I inaccurately connected his statements about poetry with an attitude that his own work was superior to the work of others. Words were exchanged, feelings got heated. Ian and I have come to an understanding. I was hasty in concluding Ian's blog post was a judgment of other work in relation to his. The fault was mine. As by way of explanation, not an excuse for the fault was mine, I have a short fuse when I perceive arrogant behaviour. My initial communication to Ian could have been more tempered, his response to me could have been so as well, but at the heart of the issue was my invalid conclusion as indicated above. On this piece. Yes, it could use some work. Perhaps Ian will take feedback on his other submissions and review this piece and modify it. One of the filters we need to apply here is the intended audience, which I understand is younger girls, specifically his granddaughters. --Jonathan Annoying the world, one person at a time (Group discounts available)
