helter skelter world

Charles Manson mystery
helter skelter world
drawn to psychotics
like a blinded morbid herd
we are intrigued
by all the things we fear
what we don't understand
we seek still to be near

it's all part of the game
what it means to live and die
a snake-like fascination
beyond what is not wise
we don't know why we do it
the news is like a drug
we want to see the pain
like a dumbstruck band of thugs

our endless deep obsessions
with those who maim and kill
who somehow live outside our world
bring destruction by their will
it's like they are admired
in some dark and twisted way
as they annihilate
the ones they love to hate

their violence feeds an image
false safety that we feel
detached, just like a movie
even though we know it's real
desensitized by gore
that all seems somehow fake
rate levels of destruction
for an innocent's intake

yet they are just like us
drawn into the game
twisted by the stories
of anger, fear, and pain
raised for living mindless
both predator and prey
intrigued in callousness
no matter what we pray

it's all part of the game
what it means to live and die
a snake-like fascination
beyond what is not wise
we don't know why we do it
the news is like a drug
we want to see the pain
like a dumbstruck band of thugs

like a Charles Manson mystery
helter skelter world
draw to psychotics
like a blinded morbid herd
we are intrigued
by all the things we fear
what we don't understand
we seek still to be near

Wooo hoo Viginia!

I see you haven't lost one iota of your talent over the years. It is even better than before. It is not only great to see you again, but wonderful reading your poetry once more. You caught just about every nerve with this one! You pretty much nailed a thing that tends to bother me at times. The fascination so many people have with mass murderers. Very well done! Respectfully, Rett: "Next time you think you're perfect, walk on water." Rett

me too

I am fascinated by pop culture, and why people are enticed by all these violent movies, not to mention books such as Helter Skelter (very disturbing) and so on. It's as if they can't get enough of it, and to my eye, the appetite for such "fare" is increasing. That said, thank you so much =) it's one of the few pieces that even when I read it, it still gives me chills, not in a "wow I'm so great" kind of way, but a "wow people are really screwed up and I see it" kind of way. I have a companion piece I am going to post next called "predator" - much older though and revised recently. I'm not sure it flows as well or has the same impact, so it will be good to have feedback. Virginia =)
