On A Steel Horse I Ride

Early Morn's
rising mist
this sea life
has got me
in its grip.
Hurried men's
icy breath's
echo across the
captain's deck.
Leaving Dutch Harbor
for those
elusive crab
on charted
course it's a
steel horse, I ride.
Even weathered
salts have
their faults and
forty foot seas
make green
horns heave.
If death comes
to me,
It will be;
deep into the
Bering Sea. .  .

Ah Now Janice

Another fan of the Deadliest Catch as my wife is. I have to admit, I find myself captivated with it also. That is a rough way to make a living. Loved the poem. Respectfully, Rett: "God made an idiot for practice, then he made a school board." Mark Twain For the sake of children, read this. http://www.neopoet.com/node/19905

Deadliest catch - one of my favourite programmes

Reading your poem brings back to me the cries of the seagulls and the sound of the sea despite all its roughness how i wish i could be a part of a world that is part of me i would love to taste those briny tears as i purse my lips and look out into the roughness with great expectation Lovely poem Janice. Janice...

I'm not a big fan of the show, but my brother is... and he talks about it enough that along with the few times I've watched it... I know a lot about it... also, my best friend loves the show too... and he is really into it... can't stop talking about it... What I will say is those guys are much more manly than me... I could never handle the extremes of cold along with the rough seas and the lack of sleep... they deserve the big money they get... great poem by the way... Richard

Richard, Thanks for the comment, yes they do deserve the money they get. The extreme weather conditions and all the abuse from sea [and fellow shipmates] Appreciate you stopping by~ _____________________________________________________ Income-tax forms should be more realistic by allowing the taxpayer to list "Uncle Sam" as a dependent Anonymous

Yea those guys on the Wizard are crazy with their jokes keepin it unreal. Once a car or truck was replaced with a crab pot and when the unsuspecting crew pulled up a pot, there it was! Thanks for your comments O~ ______________________________________________________ Income-tax forms should be more realistic by allowing the taxpayer to list "Uncle Sam" as a dependent Anonymous

Hi Janice

I really liked this work. I have a huge fondness for anything Alaskan, having lived there (Anchorage) for a time. I can see that rough water, steely gray, gray sky. I've seen the sea, but from the shore. My husband and I consider, from time to time, driving the ice road. Once I drove from Seattle across the Alcan highway in a pick-up. 'Early Morn’s rising mist this sea life has got me in its grip.' This is a beautiful line, as is Alaska, which has me in its grip. Yours, Deelilah

I like the show, and enjoyed your poem. the sea is a dangerous place. Those guys have to have a sense of humor. your style is as always good, great subject matter. You portray a good image of the unforgiving sea. Patty

Janice,

Aah the salty air waves crashing upon the ship, holding on for dear life, before I'm swallowed by the sea, I don't know why I took this ride, Oh right, you invited me on this trip. Great Imagery, I'm the green horn that heaves!!! you so well explained the force and power of the sea, and that being the reason for loving it. Great job, great write! So here's a "high five" thanks, Eddie Life is like a railroad track that leads to many junctures, if you stand on the track Love comes speeding along and runs you over!! Splat!!!!

Eddie, Great to see you, Thanks for the read and comments. I too, get sea sick very easily and would be up-chucking on deck. Takes a special breed to work on those ships. ______________________________________________________ Income-tax forms should be more realistic by allowing the taxpayer to list "Uncle Sam" as a dependent Anonymous
