Requiem for a Cat

Requiem for a Cat

Shadows gathered on the lawn

when you arrived –

the sun closed her golden eye.

You were old and deaf, patches

      of your tabby coat

            had worn away.

A white dish, a bit

of fish -- you purred

gratitude and offered

bony-ribcage ankle rubs.

Each day held some small

joy, a sun-warmed spot

in which to lie, a bug

to tease along the path.

We miss your early morning

muster:

An empty saucer –

      a door between you

            and the dawn.

We marveled at your courage

in the drudgery of age;

and marvel now at grace

or fate directing you to us.

A “proper” poem for a

A "proper" poem for a beloved pet, Gerry. I grieve with you. Two are buried in my yard and my Italian Greyhound (he did not like cold) was cremated. (My cat grieved for him too.) Sometimes I can still feel his warmth. ~A "You begin saving the world by saving one person at a time; all else is grandiose romanticism or politics." Charles Bukowski

Sweet Thank You

Thank you for your kind comment. Yes ... animals do grieve for each other. My poem was written for my daughter when her beloved pet died and she still grieves for Precious. Gerry

Cats ---

have been among my favorite people. One of my favorites ever, Pepper, curled up on my father's overstuffed chair at our then home in Arlington, Oregon ... and lay there to die. In his fetal position, I suspect. Poisoned by a neighbor hater of cats. I won't forget Pepper. Nor will I that neighbor. You have such a sweet way of writing. Mood building. Softly pragmatic. Matter-of-fact. Good command of language. All things to treasure. And I do. Thanx, Chuck

I'm a cat lover married to a kind man who is very allergic to cats. I miss them! Tragic that someone could poison a neighbor's pet. Thank you for your words of encouragement. I appreciate the review very much. Gerry
