Seagulls in Heaven
Once there was a little girl who lived with her mother in a small house on the seashore. She loved her room, where she could she the rolling sea right out her window. She loved her mother who always had a gentle smile and soft loving words. Her mother could solve anything with her love and her gentleness. Most of all she loved her dog, a beautiful golden retriever that brightened even her darkest days with his undying devotion and loyalty. Yes love was a word that ran rapid in the little girl's life and she wished for nothing more.
The little girl remembered the day her beloved dog came into her life. It was her six birthday and she remember the big red bow that was around his neck.Oh how happy she had been. she had scooped the squirming puppy up in her arms and he had smothered her face with excited kisses. That was the first day of an inseparable friendship.
The little girls days were filled with playing at the seashore. She would make sand castles complete with drawbridges and moats. the dog in his enthusiasm would trample them unintentionally, but this would not upset the little girl, no she would just laugh and hug him close. They would wade in the shallow edge of the sea splashing in the cool water. The dog loved to chase the seagulls and the little girl would join him. Their days were full with the many joys of the sea shore. After a lunch prepared by her mother, the little girl and her dog would curl up and take a nap together. When they woke they would run outdoors and continue their adventures. From stories of pirates to daring rec uses of princesses from terrifying sea monsters, they spent day after day in their own private glory.
One morning the dog woke up confused because the sun was already almost to its highest point and his beloved friend hadn't waken him to start their new adventure waiting for them just outside. He went to her bed and nudged her hand playfully with his nose. "get up" , he barked at her, "we have seagulls to chase." Finally the little girl opened her eyes and gazed apologetically at her friend. "I'm sorry boy" she whispered to him," "I just don't know whats wrong with me today." Slowly she got up and went down the stairs with her dog pouncing happily behind her. When she reached the kitchen her mother looked at her with concern."Darling "she said softly, "are you okay?" The little girl's mother felt her head and frowned. "you are burning up" she said her voice filled with concerned. "perhaps you should stay in today." "no mam ma" the little girl shouted, "we have things to do!"
The mother smiled and sighed "well lets get that fever down then we will see." " Maybe tom morrow." The little girl frowned ready to argue but took one look into her mothers face and new it was pointless. "yes" she thought to herself " tom morrow ill be better".
So she allowed herself to be taken back to bed with her trusty side kick closely at her heals.
The next day the little girl was not better, in fact she was much worse, her fever was higher and she had a tightness in her chest that felt as if she was suffocating. She coughed and coughed till it hurt to move. The dog lay next to her his sad eyes never leaving her face. Day after day , the little girl lay like this, and the dog never moved from his post by her side. Mother called the doctor and he just sadly shook his head and motioned for her to come to him. They whispered quietly to each other as the little girl went into a restless sleep. The dog did not understand what they were saying but he knew by the water coming from the little girl's mother's eyes, things were not good. He put his head on the girls side and whimpered.
One morning the little girl opened her eyes smiled at her forever faithful friend, and said "I love you" she closed her eyes and opened them no more.
The happiness that use to surround the tiny house by The sea now was engulfed with sadness. The dog did not run with the seagulls or even lift his head to look into the horizon, his friend was gone and he could not bear it. One day the mother went on the porch to bring the dog into eat and found him laying motionless .She nudged him slightly and sighed. For he too had drifted from world, and a single tear trickled down her face with bittersweet grief, mingled with a sense of peace. "Go, Go be with our little girl. go see her in heaven, tell her I love her and rejoice, for in Heaven you two can play on the seashore and chase the seagulls forever".
The End
