Fairytale Signpost (There are unicorns)

There's a horse
in a field
by a road
I drive often

he is dirty white
sullied by life
one thing missing

Horn severed from his head
the price to be paid
for leaving the fairytale

division from legend
cleaved
so to remain
in this reality
as a symbolic signpost
for me

Hornless head lowered
in split second homage
to another, who has chosen
to love in this land
but still misses the myth

Wings folded under t-shirt
crown hidden under hair, 'neath sunglasses
no one passing would know
how the fairytale had bruised her
carving her expectations
how she fled from romance and hid
for so long, in the dark
Concealing the tiniest remnant of hope
nursing a faultering, flicker of belief
and eventually emerging
leaving chrysalis of life sculpting blackness
in her flight path

Her path often passes
this beautifully scrawny
muddied and magnificent beast
This one who willingly sacrificed
his essence
his crowning glory
to leave the fairytale
and be here now, in this field
to serve as reminder
to one who was lost
that it does exist
is worth striving for, waiting for
there is magic
there are miracles, just waiting to be ridden
waves of hope, begging to be surfed

And there is a horse
in a field
by a road
I drive often
Yes, a fairytale signpost
showing me
there is magic
there is love
there are unicorns

Yaaaaaaaaaay Unicorns!!!!!

Beki, I simply love this, mostly because I love unicorns and the remaining child in me believes they once existed. This was very well written, incorporating fairy tales into the world around us. Very clever. "To leave the fairy tale.." almost has an essence that something more happened beyond this poem...this could potentially make a good short story or novel. really enjoyed this. Peace n Love Katie

Dear faerybeki,

I have mixed feelings about your poem. Here are the things I like: I like its length. I am glad you found the time in the busy days to write this. The story of love, sacrifice and loss is an old and beloved theme, and you do it much justice. Many of your words and phrases are deserving of superlatives, including: there are miracles, just waiting to be ridden waves of hope, begging to be surfed My difficulty, as I am sure you know, is the very faeryland which is your beloved place. It is my own place of difficulty. However, there is a hand-drawn unicorn, with horn, and a pride of place in our home. It was drawn by a person important to me beginning many years past. And although I know not where that person is, the picture hangs as a memory of a wandering loved one, in the wilds of the world with but my so distant care enshrined this way. Brian

Brian, thank you so much for

Brian, thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a welcome comment, I appreciate your honesty and love the story of your own little unicorn :) I'm happy you found some things in the poem that you liked and do understand that the idea of faeryland may be difficult for some, I guess I use it as a symbol, kind of, for me it is a closeness with nature, a willingess to see magic everywhere, a belief that there can be happy endings perhaps, could even be the place a wandering loved one wanders to, I suppose anything really, but essentially the poem grew from my constantly seeing this little horse, (sadly he appears to have been moved the day after I wrote this piece) and my imagination coming up with a back story for him, tinged as always with some of me. Anyway Brian, lovely to see you here I enjoy your comments and have been meaning to read you, will find some time soon, much love b x

unicorns, dragons and

unicorns, dragons and fairytales, oh, my. I've often wondered if the horn of plenty, the cornucopia came from the last unicorn. much love, Anna "You begin saving the world by saving one person at a time; all else is grandiose romanticism or politics." Charles Bukowski

I did have fun writing this

I did have fun writing this one :) Anna I like that idea of the horn of plenty coming from the last unicorn, perhaps the horn of good hope is where the last dragon lied down. Always a pleasure when you grace my pages, and I do see you as graceful, swanlike perhaps? much love b xx

Glad this one could take you somewhere happy (I hope?) and do hope things are improving in your country, there is still next to no coverage on what's happening there in our media, well what I've seen anyway. Beki,

I totally dig this piece, little fairy from fairyland. Did you know that according to legend unicorns breed by laying their heads into the laps of virgins? I think this is a wonderful parable for innocence, as your poem is a wonderful parable for the (painful but necessary) loss of innocence. Your line "Wings folded under t-shirt" also reminds me of how I used to feel I had lost my wings while growing up... Yours, ~Nina P.S. Please check the spelling of "tinyest/tiniest" again, and reconsider "serve reminder" (serve as reminder?).

Nina, always so wonderful to

Nina, always so wonderful to see you, it's fab to have you back :) Sooo glad you enjoyed, loving that this one is bringing back some (hopefully happy) childhood experiences/dreams/whatever ;) I think perhaps society makes us forget about our wings but they'll always be there, and you dear Nina fly often in your work, I've read it there, your wings are strong and not lost :) I didn't know that about unicorns breeding, thanks for sharing. Oh and thanks for the spelling, I wasn't 100% on tiniest but it just looked a bit wierd without the y lol I was probably looking at it for too long, funny how words can do that. And I will look at adding an as when I edit in a min, cheers Nina! Much love to you dear poetess xxx
