1914

Hidden beneath
lies a mothers memory
of a son too
young to fight
and soon
too young to die.

The news
reads bleack and grim
the Titanic pales beyond
of pre war
stand still
to gather and run.

Will he
pack his kilt or
trouser and be ready
to go no
holding back
with duty to follow.

His mother
with a heavy heart
gathers all to hide
no whisper is
heard but
for the gun mans toll.

Germans hide
enemy of four kingdoms
carefree civilians no more
time spent building
landsturm force
world domination or decline.

British army
dwell on small yet
strong regular forces who
will defeat the
german arrogance
to be no more.

Will mothers
hearts grow so warm
each son will or
not to return
to become
distant memory for all.

Hey fm1962,

Well, war poems and soldier poems are a bit out of my expertise, but then again these poems are much like the songs; they apply to anyone cause it could it could happen anywhere. I like how you incorporated the mother, it felt a bit disconnected emotionally, maybe some more imagery or something could have pumped some more feeling into it. I feel it has some great potential with some work, though. Peace n Love Katie

Thanks Katie,

this was my first poem about WW2, most of my war poems are about Gallipoli and some of them go with paintings. Thanks for the comment! :)fleur

Thankyou Jayne,

Darkness of Daylight is the only one published, Shittyhawk, Desert Heart, Remembered and The Anzac son's was the last WW1 poem I wrote. I feel there are a lot more inside me. Also a couple of these poems go with paintings dipicting the scene. I maybe in future asking for advice on a war poem, so I hope you will be up for it. the reason behind it all is on my profile. thankyou again, you have humbled me!! love fleur xx

I’m here… I’d love to

I'm here... I'd love to see your paintings Fleur, not only those associated with your war poems. There's nothing like a poem, a painting or a photo, in spoken word... a full-bodied experience. re the poem itself ~ i am propeace however, imo there have been some *just* wars... just haven't lived through any of them.. if mothers ruled the world...I wonder if wars would continue for any reason.. I would like to think not....to sacrifice their son or daughter for ANY reason.. and perhaps that's the beginning of permanent peace... sorry... i get hijacked.. ~A p.s. some apostrophes: mothers' hearts; gun man's toll...
