SANCTUARY

I saw a broken branch on a small
Pear tree in my front yard
And I started to finish
breaking off this poor branch

But it was beginning to sprout
Little green leaves and I worried
About the tree feeling pain or fear
As they are living things

I used to worry about hurting trees
When I was a kid, too
They were my friends and I could climb
High up into their protecting branches

And hide from my grandmother whom I feared
The leaves would me cloak in regal silence
Where I could look down at my grandmother
As she would stand and angrily call my name

Looking for me in vain
Sometimes I would stay in my tree all afternoon
Waiting for my mother to come home
Then I could climb down from my safety up above

Where I was hidden from my hurtful world below
Today I tried to be a friend to a tree and save its
Loving branches from this hurtful world and to
Return a favor from many so years ago

It seems to me that lonely children

used to spend a lot of time outdoors. At least, I did. Now, they are lonely inside with their video games. I think it was better the other way. I believe Electric Blue has a piece about trees as friends. You might enjoy it. This is a touching piece. I like it better than The Giving Tree b/c there is some reciprocity here. I'm not sure I think this works best as a poem. I do think it could be expanded into a lovely small book with some illustrations. I see a tree leaning down to pick up a scared child and holding her in its lap in stanzas 3-4. Much enjoyed.

Linda,

I enjoyed this one immensely. I agree with arrow, I like this one better than the giving tree. This one showed that you gave back, unlike the giving tree. This would make a nice children's book. Patty

I love Trees

I have always thought of them as sentinels, protectors. Ancient ones, wise beyond our years and seer's of all! I just caught the first two stanzas of your poem while i was skimming through the stream one day, and they stuck with me. Arrow, above, pointed me back in your direction and i am so glad i finished reading your work here. I do agree with Arrow and Patty, the piece is more of a narrative to me, an anecdote. It is a lovely telling though! What stuck with me was not clipping off the broken branch. I think, like people, they have to be looked after, pruned and trimmed to stay healthy and well. Just thoughts. Thank you for your inspiration and the story/poem! Always Sincere, Tonya

Hi Linda...

I liked the write... and I understand the love for trees as I feel the same way... there are trees all around my house, many of which are too big, so I've had to cut some down to prevent them or limbs from falling on the house... I always feel bad about cutting one down... even though I know that it causes everything else to flourish... Plants and trees are amazing creatures... they lose a limb and grow two or three... I guess you can tell I love nature... I'm itching to plant some new flowers here... may do it this weekend... Richard

I've been waiting for the week-end too, I want to plant some yellow and purple pansies in the little flower bed I have in the front yard. While I love trees, I am mad at my pecan tree by my drive way. A huge branch broke and fell off, right on the trunk of my little silver car. it will take $1,000 to fix the dent. insurance will pay $500. I guess I should have been doing some pruning myself, but the thing is huge. Linda
