Be Amused

smile my friend
dig down deep
into that twist of
anguished pain
and let loose amusement
from it's dam of worry
to wash away all tears

grin wide
when evil crawls
out maggoty from beneath
the nearest rock
for mirth will kill it
quicker than a gun
or righteous anger
ever could

laugh my friend
give a chortle
let loose a giggle
give a deep guffaw
at the hate of those
who denigrate
for nothing will
deflate their hatred
faster than our laughter
at their ignorance

i get a picture of the smiling sun from tele-tubbies smiling down on the evil that crawls out from under the rock, and it destroys it with a beam of sunny smiles. laugh if you will, but when i was recuperating from pnumonia, it was my favorite show every morning. we need more smiles in this world. it would wipe out much evil. keep on keeping on. gee

LOL....this teletubbies thing HAS to be a conspiracy! One of the few TV programs that I do watch is...you guessed it, TELETUBBIES!!!! LOL...they are just so strange, so funny and so innocent...the rest of my family look at me as if I am quite mad! We certainly do need more smiles, no doubt. I think I needed to lighten up, after my last effort! This piece was inspired by me and my sons' recent visit to the Baha'i temple in Evanston Illinois, a beautiful and unique house of worship on Lake Michigan, where I got into a discussion about laughter and how good it is with one of their members. "sweet fuck all" Lord...I haven't heard that expression in a month of Sundays! You made my day! I agree - poetry is about what you like and don't like! Glad you liked this one, hope you like some of my others when you get the chance and time. Respectfully Jim "Laws and rules don't kill freedom: narrow-minded intolerance does" : Race

And heres to you on this gem of a poem, I have to smile for an audience, it starts out fake and winds up being genuine. This is a wise poem all wrapped up in rhyme, Loved it. Patty

It does work...

but hard to do sometimes... great theme, I think I've got one about it in one of my notebooks but it would pale to this one... loved your laughter wordings... Richard

Yes it is sometimes hard to do...but as Patty said, even when you fake it it almost always becomes real. It's a tactic I often use on my angry kids... "Hey, is that I smile? That right there on your face? Oh my goodness that really IS a smile!" Heehee works every time! Respectfully Jim "Laws and rules don't kill freedom: narrow-minded intolerance does" : Race

Jim,

clever, amusing, true...and now I´ve run out of adjectives. Sorry if I spoil the fun with a sad note, but your poem reminds me of Kaz´s tag. I will never forget her "It is impossible to smile on the outside without feeling better on the inside." Yours, ~Nina “Like plumbers and dentists, poets are fallible, and the possibility of genuine nonsense cannot be ruled out.” (Mark Haddon)

Please do not apologize about being sad. You do not spoil anything by being sad at the loss of a friend. I did not know Kaz, but I have read her work and know the quote, which I love. The obvious respect and love that people here have for her speaks for itself. So be sad at her passing, and be proud that you knew her, and that she called you friend. Laughter

is the best medicine. loved those little quips and quotes from the readers digest. and always felt better after reading them because they made me smile and laugh! You are SO SO right! I love a deep guffaw. Keep on smiling and the world will smile with you. Least we can try and most will feel so much better for it! Lovely Poem, much insight! Always Sincere, Tonya

I am glad that you enjoyed reading my poem. In the early 1950s, Australian scientists finally penetrated the deep interior of New Guinea. The aboriginal people there had been cut off from the rest of humanity for thousands of years. At first, the aborigines thought that the scientists were demons, because of their pale skins. It wasn't long, however, before the aboriginies knew that the scientists were in fact people, just like them. Because the scientists smiled. Thanks Tonya, and keep smiling! Jim,

Let's laugh at all the stupidity that people enact on themselves, if they could see from where we stand they would laugh themselves!!! I love this write! I laugh most of my life, because I've seen a lot, that I still can't believe, people do to themselves. Wonderful and fun to read!!! thanks, Eddie Life is like a railroad track that leads to many junctures, if you stand on the track Love comes speeding along and runs you over!! Splat!!!!

Glad that you enjoyed it. Yes, in some of the worst times of life, when people are screaming hatred at each other, I have watched a simple smile blow all the nastiness to kingdom come! Respectfully Jim "Laws and rules don't kill freedom: narrow-minded intolerance does" : Race
