Twilight Moments in Small Town America

Twilight Moments in Small Town America

When twilight descends like a misty curtain
To separate day from the coming night
Dimly stars twinkle and glimmer
Like fireflies with their soft shimmering light

The world winds down like an old clock spring
And windows give forth incandescent glows
The aromatic smells of cooking wafts outward
To tickle the palette and tantalize the nose

All along dim lit streets, cars are pulling aside
Young men and women arrive at designated hours
And spend precious moments in loving embrace
As love briefly blossoms like rare flowers

Then regretful farewells and goodnight kisses
The promises of tomorrow lingering in the air
Into the warm embraces of family and homework
Before evening promises of slumber without a care

My thanks to Richard and his Whippoorwill poem that inspired this one.

Thanks you

That is the exact image I was trying to evoke in the reader. I like to write in differing eras, differing styles (mostly rhyme though) and different subjects. That way the reader and me does not get too bored with my writing. *LOL* Very glad that you learn from the differing ways I write. I appreciate that very much Julie. Thanks from an old curmudgeon. I like this

Do you need 'THE' designated hours? It swings along and then the beautiful word 'incandescent' takes longer to say! What I want to say is that this needs a little tickling to get it to SING! The potential is there. Respectfully Ann of Norway.

Right you are Ann

I have made some changes that I think helps a lot without messing up the feel of the poem. Thank you my friend. Respectfully, Rett: "Next time you think you're perfect, walk on water." "A Democracy can withstand anything but Democrats." Robert A. Heinlein

Rett, Its Beautiful.

Rett, Its Beautiful. After your " And The Universe Screams"(Which I had really enjoyed sooooo much)you gave us another sweet piece here. I loved the scenes which you showed me in this poem. Evening is my favourite time(though sometimes it becomes the worst and painful for me to pass it), usually I go out with my friend for a walk in the evening. "All along the dimly lit street, cars are pulling aside." it was so engaging, I felt it in my own way. Enjoyed it.Thanks for sharing. Sincerely, Wafi

Your words are always appreciated. I was trying to evoke a small town peacefulness to this one and I think I succeeded. I hope your family is well along with you. Thank you my friend

It is all how you look at something. When you see a little slice of life. Take your initial impression and write about that. Then look at it from, say the complete opposite point of view and write about that. Then, just as exercise try to pick out one thing or person and try to look at it from their point of view. An example, say there is a person on the opposite side of the bus from you. What do they see as compared to what you do. *G* Sorry, getting a little wordy here. Thanks my friend. Maggie, one of the greatest compliments to me

is if I inspire someone to write something because of one of my poems. Many here inspire me also. Janice H. Janice P. You, Julie, Richard, Ann, Anna and many more too numerous to mention. Jim also writes some interesting and inspiring poetry. Respectfully, Rett: "A Democracy can withstand anything but Democrats." Robert A. Was looking at Blues the other day on U Tube

and watched a movie of a man playing gitar on a porch of a store with a woman singing behind him a lone intersection with a cut off model A with truck bed on the behind jounces past customers laze in and out no hurry on their go rivetted to the screen the magic of his hands the sadness ringing out of his weathered instrument and tired laid back feeling of the place the atmosphere heavy like a humidty pressing down even taming the dust and dogs learned he died after his house took fire and he lived in the not too burned parts until he got Pneumonia from sleeping on a wet bed Poets singers gamblers road lives all die hard sometimes your poem just reminded me of that for some reason brought it back some thanks Rett

Isn't it amazing what a simple little poem can evoke in a person's mind? I always find it so. Like when reading yours, something totally unrelated to what you write will spring to life in my mind and I sometimes will spend hours thinking about it. That is one of the reasons I love poetry. I don't always have time enough right now to comment on everything I read, but I read as much as I can. A lot of my writing lately has been more hurried than I like, but that is the way it goes at times. I am very plesed that it brought out some memories. Thank you very much my friend. Rett, No offense, but this brought me back to my childhood in the 1950's a safe, warm, slower paced world. A totally different era that I truly miss. Nicely written~ ______________________________________________________ Income-tax forms should be more realistic by allowing the taxpayer to list "Uncle Sam" as a dependent Anonymous

Why should that offend me?

I am very glad it brought back memories. I was born in 1952 and this is somewhat flavored by that time so I am flattered. Thank you so much!
