Preference Of Myth

I'd rather hang with Odin
from Yggdrasill,
upside down
on the world tree
with eye plucked out
for wisdom's gain,
two ravens whispering
all secrets of the world
into my eager ear
than sit within an empty church
waiting for more nothing

I'd rather stand with Mithras
face aglow with laughing grace
my feet awash with cleanse
of steaming blood from sacred bull
bringing life to lifelessness
with sweet and willing sacrifice
than live in fear of retribution
from a mad judgmental god.

I'd rather dance with Pan
listening to his skirling pipes
lift bliss into the hearts of all
and burst green leaves
from bonds of winter cold
awakening the world
with new unfettered life
than live fearful of a demon
made by evil men for my damnation

I'd rather join with Aphrodite
risking her hot jealousy
to plunge within her passion
and thrust new life so deep
into her eager clutching womb
with pounding ecstacy
than spend my life as celibate husk
waiting for imaginary virgins

I'd rather bask in Thoth's reflection
feel the warmth of his protection
fill every corner of my darkness
leaving only endless light
to shine away all ignorance
from my mind and heart
than bear the bleak sterility
of superstitious ignorance
one more lonely instant

Yggdrasil is pronounced egg-Drah-sil or eeg-drah-sel, depending who you talk to!

preference

i, being somewhat of a pagan myself, love this! i have always been a fan of the gods, rather than god. if you know what i mean? i guess that it all started when i read bullfinches' mythology when i was about 12. keep up the good work! geezer.

Yes, I do know what you mean. Life's a lot more interesting that way! LOL Respectfully Jim "Laws and rules don't kill freedom: narrow-minded intolerance does" : Race

I write of gods purely for

I write of gods purely for entertainments sake, Theres only one God, in whom I trust my fate. I am humbled at my being and every other living creature When stopping to reflect, I ask myself "who are we?" and chose to believe in one supreme higher being. I did not comment nor make this comment to offend you. Truly, if I am to be true to myself, i could not let it go. We are all given free choice. I think, man should not always look to please himself, as each of the gods above mentioned, would encourage. Perhaps God is hard, for is hard to deny ourselfs anything when is someone else that is truly in need of our help. Your writing skills are wonderful, is perhaps, just the message I have the problem with in this one. Take care...(I love mythology also...and many actually have some bases of truth beneath them.) Always Sincere, Tonya

To each their own. The message is neither more valid or less valid than any other. No offense is taken. Thank you for you comment Respectfully Jim "Laws and rules don't kill freedom: narrow-minded intolerance does" : Race

*upside down (on) the world

*upside down (on) the world tree I find it awkward to end on a preposition and also upside-down seems like it should get its own line. After all, this poem turns modern monotheism (I assume) upside down. *from (a) mad judgmental god. Great lines! *and burst green leaves from bonds of winter cold But if you could say how you felt, what would you say? :) *than bear the bleak sterility of superstitious stupidity one more lonely instant - This last line is great. It can be lonely to feel alienated from God as commonly conceptualized and the vast community of believers. My only quibble with this stanza is the rhyme in the first two lines, which to my ears gives it a slightly comical tone. I really enjoyed this poem for the amount of knowledge. I find the title a curious choice, esp. given these lines: than live fearful of a demon/ made by evil men for my damnation. I almost think the title should be Preference of Other Myths.

Thanks Arrow

Thanks Arrow. Corrected the errors. The title remains unchanged - it is ALL myth in the end. sterility/stupidity I'll have to think about. Respectfully Jim "Laws and rules don't kill freedom: narrow-minded intolerance does" : Race

Jim...

for one not seeking a debate you have touched on the most open subject for it... that being said, you won't get any debate from me, as I agree whole-heartedly and love the way you've written it, and I realize the poem or the author doesn't seek validation, which makes me like it that much more... hard to comment without saying something about the content... but oh well, I love it! and I think the title should remain too for the reason you gave to Arrow... just my own thoughts though... with eye plucked out... with an eye or with eyes maybe... totally enjoyed the read and the comments... A pleasure to read, completely

I really loved this write Jim, lots & lots. & for me myths are stories that can be interpreted. & in any case, feels to me like the point is more about the freedom to choose a (any) more fruitful & rich myth than one that is restrictive & possibly all sorts of other things (caught myself, almost went into details & thought better of it out of respect for differing beliefs, all of this is just opinion anyway, no-one is right or wrong). A pleasure to read, completely Anni "Out beyond the ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I will meet you there. When the soul lies down in that grass, the world is too full to talk about ideas, language, and even the phrase, "each other" doesn't make any sense."

Sorry it took me so long to reply. Very very very busy! I am glad that you enjoyed my poem. I always think of it this way: Religion is what we practice to abate our fears. Myth is the expression of our delight in, and wonder at, the uniqueness that the gods give us, with the gift of life. I no longer fear. Thanks Anni Respectfully Jim "Laws and rules don't kill freedom: narrow-minded intolerance does" : Race

Fearless!

That is brilliant, I totally agree. Fear is such an illusion anyway & always a waste of our energy/time. How brilliant to be rid of it.
