Morning Sanctuary

From this towering vantage point

blankets of gauzy fog shroud the valley floor

hiding it from my sight.

Sunlight, a promise on the horizon,

will soon burn the mists away.

But for now the sun’s feeble rays

stain the morning skies in muted

hues of rose, lavender and coral.

Gaining gradually in intensity,

she rises in the eastern sky

burning off in patches the mantle of fog

until no vestige remains

to hide the earth from view.

A hawk glides effortlessly overhead

searching for an unwary morsel

stirring far below to satiate his hunger.

And in this hushed place, I listen to the softly

whispered song of the sunrise,

the muffled stirring of the wind in the trees and

chattering voices of woodland creatures

in this, my morning sanctuary.

Loved it

I found this a really lovely little feast, so many lines that made me just glow with the pleasure of them, of recognition & of the joy of the imagery... what in my clumsy way I would call "yummy". Hope that doesn't offend. I loved it. Anni I wish to walk gracefully..... so as not to spill water.

Debra, This is beautiful

I felt like I was back in the mountains again. Have you ever watched a thunderstorm from the topside while sitting at an overlook? It is an awesome sight. I couldn't find anything to complain about or to suggest changes to so I guess you will just have to be content with an excellent. *G* Respectfully, Rett: "Next time you think you're perfect, walk on water." Thank you Maggie & Rett

Your complements are most welcome...I will take an excellent from you any day Rett! I have watched the storms roll in and even tried to outrun one to avoid a drenching, to no avail. Maggie I will check out the poems that you have suggested. As you know I haven't been on much recently, but I will catch up. Keep up the good work you guys...you inspire me more than you realize. Sincerely~ Debbie

Ah Debbie

You have caught that endless moment of mountain dawn with almost painful clarity. And me, living 500 miles from the nearest mountains...homesick for them now, even after a quarter-century: sky-scrapers are a poor substitute, at best. 5 stars my friend Respectfully Jim "Laws and rules don't kill freedom: narrow-minded intolerance does" : Race

Hi Jim,

The place that inspired this poem is my friends home in Virginia. She lives on top of the mountain and the view from her home is absolutly breath taking! You can see for miles and miles, and the view is ever changing with the seasons and weather. The first time I visited her their, it was like going to Heaven...the road is straight up all the way and then you get to the top and WOW! Thanks for the vote, it means a lot to me! Sincerely~ Debbie
