Who is my Neighbor?

Who is my Neighbor? I asked the Lord“who is my neighbor?”I asked Him,“whom should I defend, feed, who should I make comfortable?” He smiled at me, sadly,’and I wondered why I asked. “Dear boy, it is the soldier and the sailor, the Marine, and the pilot.” At this I nodded in understanding. “But no! Do not think you understand! It is also the Iraqi, the Afghani, the Kurd and the North Korean. These are your neighbor’s too.” “Your brother’s and sisters, these are the homeless, the Japanese family interred in campsback in World War II.” “Am I my brother’s keeper?”I ask Him. “That and more.” He says. “People who love war, love power and money.Speak as loudly for peaceas they do for battle.” “But Lord!” I say.“Then they will call me a ‘peacenik!’” “Who would you shout for peace for?”The Lord asks me. “Speak for the soldier! The Iraqi, speak for the prostitute, your sister!” “What will I accomplish?”I ask. “Maybe nothing, but you will do itfor Me.”

You and your difficult questions-

are we defending "who"s or "what"'s inside of "who"'s? I'm inclined to think we're in search, destroy and nurture missions with everyone, including ourselves. Finding the good and nurturing it and weeding out the malignant defenses. The "how," of course, it what makes it so impossible. Your ending is unsatisfying but you can hardly be expected to solve the age-old problems!

perfect

I have a feeling that you knew all this before you wrote the poem, Mark. There can be no height of charity or depth of compassion than this--to love all, however difficult it may seem. Though naturally one thinks of the Gospels reading this, my other "favorite" in the Great Book kept popping up: Isaiah. "Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil, learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; defend the fatherless, plead for the widow" (Isa. 1:16-17) GB!

great writing!!

I love the stance you have on questioning your place in the world and in relation to others AND God!! I'm a bible reader, but I am constantly doubting that I could ever help others to understand how I feel about Him... you have inspired me to write about Him and about my relationship with Him!!! THANKS!!!:@) ~~Adrienne k.
