Post Cambrian Man

Post Cambrian Man When I woke up from an afternoon napI considered my jawbone.Specifically I considered a small portion of it,the lower left corner, where the two halves of the mandible hinge together;(the part archaeologists always seem to find in ancient man)and I hopedthat if someone finds itin ten thousand or so yearsthey don’t call me “Post Cambrian Man”or something to that effect. On the news this week was a fascinating storyof an Egyptian mummy, unsealed from its sarcophagi after 2,400 years.“Amazing science!”Man, just let sleeping dogs lie. Now don’t get me wrong,do whatever with my bones if you find them.(I’m sure not to care)Just don’t embarrass yourselfwondering if I ate from bone chinaor straight off the ground with my hands.(after all, I’m a simpleton) Actually, that’s what bothers me.When I go to the History Museum, when I read the Bible, when I study.Ancient people seem to meto be quite well sophisticated.Wouldn’t it be a blastif the Neanderthals were all PhD’s?

Mark...

these thoughts I've had too... but you wrote it down with precision thinking... loved your ponderings! Neanderthals... PhD's... lol. but you know as well as I that survival depends on learning how to... they couldn't have been too backwards to make it through hunger, sickness, the all-consuming-cold of the night... the instinct to survive had to be there... and passed on... and added to... and so on. On the theme of Socrates I

On the theme of Socrates I would add the jawbone of an ass, unearthed with the finest porcelain Blue Rose English China might on wonder if and when the Neanderthals were implicit and complicit in the art of high tea and suicide. (Ok so I mixed some metaphors and events for idiosyncratic poetic effect ;-) ~Anna p.s. Neanderthals and Homo Sapiens share 99.5% of DNA & have a common ancestor 500,000 years ago ; chimpanzees share 98.77 in a study concluded in 2005. pps. Much enjoyed your musings.... I'd hate to rudely awaken you.... whatever would you write????????

ah Anna, your poetic musings are a delight

and greatly appreciated. Do you mean homo sapiens, which are purportedly our ancestors, or homo sapiens sapiens, which is what scientists call our genus? As a note to the mention of rudely awakening me; once, when I lived in Boston I was involved in a hmm, shall we say "romantic tryst" with a lovely young lady one night when in the middle of our "activities" I had to stop because I needed to write a poem RIGHT THEN. She was none too pleased. Mark W. "An insult is just someone who hates you making a noise to indicate their hatred, a barking dog. That must be the true sign

That must be the true sign of a poet, Mark! ROFL... once when I thought I was in love with an English poet, I wrote a poem about just that...of course, it was all astral sex.. coitus interruptus, in any case..... About the homo sapiens sapience ~ sometimes there's not much evidence in modern man. is there? ;-) Much love. ~A

thanks Richard!

I feel totally awesome, because when I wrote this I was thinking "I hope Richard reads this." You made my day with your comment. It's strange reading about ancient people, and some of their technology and mysteries. I sometimes they much more knowledge than we assume they did. I saw an interesting thing at the Natural History Museum. There is a model of an Inuit so house from the mid nineteenth century (understanding that they've used the same techniques, though, for thousands of years) It was fascinating to see how they had built a spacious home almost completely underground where the temperature is a constant 53 degrees compared to the harsh tundra outside. How does one come to that knowledge? Mark W. "An insult is just someone who hates you making a noise to indicate their hatred, a barking dog. Knowledge always comes to us

Knowledge always comes to us as a result of trial and error, n'est-ce pas? We pass knowledge along with our genes.... it's pretty amazing to think that we know things and so have the ability to re-cognize them, eh? ~A p.s. see ya'll next weekend... will miss our (a)musings 'til then.

indeed, lol

during that same session (different night though, long story)we stopped in the middle to grab Chinese at 3 in the morning. Which reminds me... that has to be the greatest invention EVER, getting Chinese takeout at three A.M. I mean seriously, how do you beat that? If one opened in Cleveland, they'd hit a goldmine! Also, please enunciate very well when you say "astral" sex... there are visuals there, though unintended, that I just don't need! Mark W. Visuals? They’re YOUR

Visuals? They're YOUR visuals, intended or unintended, eh? lol. Mark. Have a great week... ~A "We have to try to get rid of the notion of time. Mark

You know... most people don't think about their jawbones when they first get up. Most people's thoughts are "I gotta pee!", "What time is it?", and "I'm hungry." Not you, though! Your logic is awesome, and I really liked the end thought that you leave us all with. Now you have me trying to figure out how to distinguish the simpletons from the geniuses in pre-modern humanity! I'm usually not eloquent at all

when I wake up. (or anytime, for that matter!) I'm shaking the cobwebs of a Nyquill like sleep off right now, (ok, generic Nyquill) and I think my first thought was "cartoons!" That and the fact that I realized my whole day's intake of food consisted of two slim fast shakes and a french frie... yet I STILL gained 1.3lbs.! Musta been the freaking Chinese I had last night...
